OTD Angelo Mathews became the first batter to be timed out in international cricket in 2023

OTD Angelo Mathews became the first batter to be timed out in international cricket in 2023

One of the most dramatic and controversial moments in cricket history unfolded on November 6, 2023 as former Sri Lankan captain Angelo Mathews became the first player ever to be dismissed ‘timed out’ in international cricket. The rare incident occurred during the 2023 ODI World Cup match between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, sparking widespread debate on fair play and sportsmanship.

Sri Lanka were 135 for 4 when Mathews walked out to bat. However, as he prepared to face Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan, he discovered that the strap on his helmet was broken. While he signalled for a replacement helmet, Shakib appealed to the umpires, claiming Mathews had not been ready to face the ball within the two-minute time limit stipulated by the International Cricket Council (ICC) playing conditions.

After a brief discussion, the umpires upheld Shakib’s appeal and declared Mathews timed out, making him the first cricketer in the history of international cricket to be dismissed in such a manner. According to ICC rules, a new batter must be ready to face the next delivery within two minutes of the previous wicket falling, a rule stricter than the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) code, which allows three minutes in domestic and club matches.

Mathews protested, arguing that he was on the field within the required time and that the delay was due to the unforeseen equipment issue. He was visibly frustrated, threw his helmet and exchanged heated words with the officials. Sri Lanka’s head coach, Chris Silverwood, also expressed his displeasure from the dressing room, criticising the rigid interpretation of the rule.

The timing of the incident couldn’t have been worse for Sri Lanka, who were struggling to keep their World Cup campaign alive. The dismissal not only disrupted their innings but also dented their morale. Bangladesh eventually went on to win the match by three wickets, while the time out controversy became one of the defining talking points of the 2023 World Cup.
