One of India’s finest leg-spinners, Amit Mishra, was born on November 24, 1982. On Monday, he turns 43 years old. His most significant achievement in international cricket is winning the 2013 Champions Trophy. However, he didn’t play any matches during the tournament, which was held in England and Wales.
Mishra made his international debut in April 2003 in an ODI game against South Africa in Dhaka. However, he had to wait for five years to make his Test debut, which came in 2008 against Australia in Punjab. During his five-year absence, Mishra said that he was battling depression and anger, as he was not getting opportunities despite performing well.
However, on his Test debut, Mishra made his comeback memorable, picking up a five-for against Australia. The Delhi-born played 22 Tests, 36 ODIs, and 10 T20Is for the national team. He picked up 76, 64, and 16 wickets across the three formats, respectively. Mishra was also a very handy batter down the order, who had four fifties in Test matches, including a five-for.
Mishra’s final international appearance came in February 2017 when he played a T20I against England at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Chennai. While he bowled a good spell, finishing with figures of 1/23 in four overs, he was outperformed by fellow leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal. The latter picked up his career-best figures of 6/25. After this encounter, India decided to go ahead with Chahal as their specialist leg-spinner in the shortest format.
Mishra went on to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL) till 2024. He played for four franchises in the cash-rich league, with Lucknow Super Giants being his final destination. The 42-year-old announced his retirement from all forms of cricket in September 2025, calling time on a 25-year career.
