OTD: Afghanistan created history with victory over England in 2023 World Cup

Afghanistan faced England in the 13th match of the ODI World Cup on October 15, 2023. It was the seventh game of the tournament for both teams. Afghanistan had won three out of the first seven games, with two of their three wins coming against former world champions, Sri Lanka and Pakistan. 

England, the defending champions, started their campaign with wins in their first two matches. However, they had lost the next four games before facing Afghanistan. 

Against Afghanistan, England won the toss and elected to bowl. Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran added 114 runs for the first wicket. Afghanistan lost the next five wickets for just 76 runs. 

It looked like the team might bundle out on a low score BUT Ikram Alikhil changed the course of the match with his knock of 58 off 66. Rashid Khan (23) and Mujeeb Ur Rahman (28) then helped Afghanistan finish with 284 runs on the board. Gurbaz was the highest scorer for Afghanistan as he made 80 off 57 while Adil Rashid was the pick of the bowlers for England as he took three wickets for 42 runs in 10 overs.

England lost their first four wickets for under 100 runs. Harry Brook played a fine knock of 66 runs off 61 deliveries, however, he received no support from the other end, as no English batter apart from Brook scored more than 35. England were eventually bundled out for 215 runs, losing the match by 69 runs as Rashid and Mujeeb took three wickets each. England were all out for less than 250 runs twice in the tournament after this game.

England won three out of nine games and finished in seventh position. Afghanistan lost their next two matches against India and Australia and finished in sixth place.
