OTD: Abdul Kadir, who was born today also made an unforgettable debut for Pakistan as a wicketkeeper

On this day, back in 1944, Pakistani star cricketer Abdul Kadir was born. Notably, the star cricketer was just able to play four Test matches in his cricketing career from 1964 to 1965, as he was ruled out due to grave injuries. However, it appears that Kadir has made a great impact on Pakistan’s camp and played a pivotal role in his cricketing career. Meanwhile, the great player has also played 36 first-class matches and amassed 1523 runs, the best knock of unbeaten 114 runs in his career.

Speaking about his international journey, he made his Test debut on October 24, 1964, against Australia, where he made 95 runs. This match was played in Karachi from October 24 to October 29. Pakistan was able to post 414 and 279 runs in the first and second innings, respectively, as Kadir made brilliant 95 runs from nine fours and stitched the stand with Ibadulla to post the great total after the first innings.

However, Australia was bundled out for 352 runs, which helped them get the lead. Meanwhile, Kadir made 26 runs in the second inning; however, Australia failed to chase down the total, and the game was drawn later. He opened the batting with Khalid Ibadulla, with whom he had scored 249 runs. Also, this inning marks the first of two debutants for any wicket in the history of Test cricket. Meanwhile, he was also the first Pakistan cricketer to be dismissed in the 90’s on Test debut, while he also has one more half-century to his name against Australia in Auckland.

Kadir was known as a Test wicketkeeper, but he took no catches in his career and made a big impact with the bat. Notably, Kadir’s thumb was broken when both sides met at the iconic MCG five weeks later, which made him ruled out of the game. Following his retirement, he served as vice president of the National Bank of Pakistan and died on March 12, 2002.
