OTD 2022: Lahore Qalandars Win Maiden PSL Title – Pakistan Super League Final History

Lahore Qalandars created history by winning their first-ever Pakistan Super League (PSL) title on February 27, 2022. The final, played in Lahore, saw them defeat Multan Sultans by 42 runs in a commanding performance that marked a memorable milestone for the franchise.

Batting first, Lahore Qalandars posted a competitive total of 180/5 in their 20 overs. The innings did not begin as planned, as openers Fakhar Zaman (3) and Abdullah Shafique (14) fell early, putting pressure on the middle order. Zeeshan Ashraf and Kamran Ghulam also departed cheaply, leaving the team in a tricky situation.

However, veteran all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez rose to the occasion with a superb knock of 69 off 46 balls, striking nine fours and a six. He found solid support in England’s young batter Harry Brook, who played a fluent unbeaten innings of 41 off just 22 deliveries, including two boundaries and three sixes. In the final overs, David Wiese provided a blistering unbeaten cameo of 28 off only eight balls, smashing one four and three sixes to propel Lahore to a formidable total.

For Multan Sultans, Asif Afridi was the standout bowler, returning impressive figures of 3/19 in his four overs while David Willey and Shahnawaz Dahani chipped in with a wicket each.

In response, Multan Sultans were bowled out for 138 in 19.3 overs. Openers Shan Masood (19) and Mohammad Rizwan (14) failed to provide a solid start. Key batters such as Muhammad Amir Barki, Asif Afridi, and Rilee Rossouw fell cheaply, denting the chase.

Tim David (27 off 17) and Khushdil Shah (32 off 23) attempted to revive the innings, but regular wickets halted the momentum. The lower order offered little resistance as Lahore’s bowlers maintained relentless pressure.

Captain Shaheen Shah Afridi led from the front with figures of 3/30, while Hafeez and Zaman Khan claimed two wickets each. Haris Rauf and Wiese picked up one apiece. Hafeez was deservedly named Player of the Match for his all-round brilliance.

Zaman Khan earned the Emerging Player of the Tournament award, while Shadab Khan finished as the Bowler of the Tournament with 19 wickets, including two four-wicket hauls and a five-for. Fakhar Zaman was crowned Batter of the Tournament for his remarkable 588-run campaign.
