OTD 2011: India vs England Ends in Thrilling Tie – ICC Cricket World Cup Classic

The 11th Match of Group B at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on February 27, 2011, was one of the most dramatic ties in World Cup history. After India posted 338, England matched the score with 338 for 8.

India, having won the toss, chose to bat first. Virender Sehwag hit 35 off 26 balls, giving the hosts a solid start before falling at 46/1. From there, Sachin Tendulkar built a 134-run partnership with Gautam Gambhir, with the latter scoring 51. Tendulkar reached his hundred off 103 balls and finished with 120 from 115 deliveries, including 10 boundaries and five sixes. Following that, Yuvraj Singh added 58 off 50 balls, and MS Dhoni chipped in with 31 off 25.

However, England bounced back in the death as Tim Bresnan picked up five wickets for 48 runs. India collapsed from 305/4 to 338 all out in 49.5 overs, losing their last seven wickets for just 32 runs.

Chasing 339, captain Andrew Strauss led from the front. Alongside Kevin Pietersen, who added 31 off 22 balls, Strauss ensured England got off to a perfect start. Strauss reached his fifty off 50 balls and his hundred off 99.

Meanwhile, Jonathan Trott made 16, but Ian Bell played a crucial hand, scoring 69 off 71 balls, and added 170 runs with Strauss for the third wicket. India’s veteran pacer, Zaheer Khan, returned for his spell and removed Bell for 69 as he was caught in the deep. On the very next over, Zaheer trapped the English captain lbw by a yorker.

England batters, including Paul Collingwood and Matt Prior, walked back shortly after. With 30 needed from two overs, Graeme Swann and Bresnan hammered maximums, and added 29 from those two overs, leaving 14 required off the final over bowled by Munaf Patel.

Ajmal Shahzad smashed his first ball for six to leave England needing two runs off the final delivery, of which Swann just managed to run a single as the Three Lions finished on 338/8. The game ended in a tie, with two teams sharing a point each.
