OTD | 1970, birth of former South Africa left-arm fast bowler Brett Schultz

Former South Africa left-arm pacer Brett Schultz was born on 26 August 1970. He played for the Rainbow Nation between 1992 and 1997, but only represented them in nine Tests and one ODI. Had injuries not been his nemesis, Schultz would have been one of the leading players in South African pace attack history.

The East London-born cricketer made his international debut against the touring Indians in the 1992-93 season, where he had moderate success. Known for his aggressive pace, Schultz caught the eye during his debut tour in Sri Lanka for a three-match Test series in 1993–94.

The left-arm pacer troubled both right- and left-handed batsmen to bag 20 wickets in three Tests. His scintillating performance helped South Africa register a famous series victory. Notably, Schultz was adjudged Player of the Series.

Despite his career being plagued by injury and making only a handful of appearances, the 54-year-old managed to earn the tag of being one of the most intimidating fast bowlers in the world. His story is one of the best examples of how important fitness and accuracy are for a pacer to extend his/her career.

Schultz, before hanging up his boots, grabbed 37 Test wickets at an economy of 2.59 and an average of 20.24. He also has two five-wicket hauls to his credit. In his only ODI game, the southpaw registered the figure of 1/35 at an economy of 3.89.

During his professional career, Schultz also played for Eastern Province, Western Province and Gauteng. In his second innings, the South African turned to business.

He is also an ambassador for Sasfin Bank Cape Town Cricket Sixes, alongside cricketers Alan Donald, Jacques Rudolph and Merrick Pringle. He is actively involved in supporting many charitable organizations as well.
