Two out of the five lowest ever Test totals have been defended at The Oval. Some of the lowest fourth-innings scores in Test cricket have also been scored at this venue.
Let’s look at the top 3 lowest Test totals defended at the Oval:
1. Australia 85 vs England (1882)
Australia toured England to play a single Test match in 1882. Australia elected to bat after winning the toss and was bundled out for 63 runs. England didn’t have a great outing either as they were all out for 101 runs. In the second innings, Hugh Massie scored a half-century and led Australia to a total of 122 runs. England had a target of 85 runs in front of them. W.G. Grace was the highest scorer for the team with 32 runs. He was out when England required 32 runs to win with six wickets in hand. England lost the next six wickets for just 24 runs and lost the match by seven runs. Frederick Spofforth was the pick of the bowlers and took seven wickets for 44 runs.
2. England 111 vs Australia (1896)
In 1896, Australia again toured England to play a three-match Test series. Australia were on the receiving end this time. England made 145 runs in the first innings after winning the toss. Only four batters managed to make a double-digit score for Australia, and the team was all out for 119 runs. England had a similar outing in the third innings and was bundled out for 84 runs. Australia had a target of 111 runs to win the match as well as the series. Bobby Peel took six wickets while Jack Hearne picked four as Australia made 44 runs and lost the match by 66 runs. It was Australia’s second-lowest total at that time.
3. England 124 vs Australia (1997)
The Australia tour of England in 1997 was the last time both teams played a six-match Test series. By the time the sixth match came, Australia had already won the series. In the sixth match, England won the toss and elected to bat. Glenn McGrath, who had already taken an eight-wicket haul at Lord’s, picked seven wickets in the first innings as England were all out for 180. In reply, Australia earned a 40-run lead and posted 220 runs on the board. England could score only 163 runs in the third innings, all thanks to a seven-wicket haul from Michael Kasprowicz. Australia required 124 runs to win the game, but were not prepared for Andy Caddick and Phil Tufnell as the duo shared nine wickets among themselves and no Australian batter managed to cross the 20-run mark. England won the match by 19 runs as Australia could just make 104 runs in the fourth innings.
