Ireland vs Pakistan 2007: Ireland Shock Pakistan in Historic ICC World Cup Upset

Ireland scripted history on March 17, 2007, at Sabina Park in Jamaica, as they pulled off one of the biggest upsets in sporting history, defeating 1992 champions Pakistan and knocking them out in the process from the group stage itself. In the battle of green versus green, it was the “Men in Emerald” coming up trumps.

Ireland captain Trent Johnston won the toss and opted to field first on a damp surface with a considerable presence of grass. Dave Langford-Smith gave Ireland a huge breakthrough in the first over itself as he dismissed Mohammad Hafeez. Younis Khan also had a forgettable outing as Boyd Rankin dismissed him for a three-ball duck. Imran Nazir and Mohammad Yousuf tried to resurrect the innings, but the Irish bowlers were too hot to handle. Both of them spent a decent amount of time at the crease but couldn’t put up substantial scores.

Pakistan skipper Inzamam-ul-Haq, who was the best batter in the side, was dismissed for one by Andre Botha. Wicketkeeper-batter Kamran Akmal turned out to be the highest run-getter for Pakistan in the match. Walking out to bat at No. 7, Akmal scored a gritty 27 off 47 balls, hitting four boundaries. However, he kept on losing wickets at the other end, which made things even more difficult.

Mohammad Sami and Iftikhar Anjum made a valiant stand of 25 runs for the ninth wicket. The Asian giants were eventually bowled out for 132. Out of these, 29 runs came in the form of extras, with Ireland bowling as many as 23 wides. Rankin was the pick of the bowlers, as he picked up three wickets in nine overs. He bowled 13 wides, but it was understandable with the kind of movement that he was getting.

In the second innings, Ireland were in a spot of bother after losing the wickets of Jeremy Bray and Eoin Morgan inside the first six overs. However, William Porterfield and Niall O’ Brien showed great resilience in challenging conditions to add 47 runs. Andre Botha was dismissed for a duck, but Niall and his younger brother Kevin O’Brien added 38 runs to take Ireland to the brink.

Niall was eventually dismissed by Shoaib Malik after he had scored 72 off 107 balls. He hit six fours and one six during his gritty knock. Andrew White and Kyle McCallan departed off consecutive deliveries in the following over as Ireland slumped to 113/7 from 108/4.

However, Kevin and Trent Johnston took their team to victory in the 42nd over, with three wickets to spare. Ireland reached the target with 50 balls still left in their innings. Sami picked up a three-for, and the other Pakistani bowlers also bowled well. However, they just did not have enough runs to defend.
