IPL: Top 3 lowest totals defended by Delhi Capitals

IPL: Top 3 lowest totals defended by Delhi Capitals

In the ongoing Indian Premier League 2023, Delhi Capitals had a disastrous start as they lost their first five games. However, in the last two games they beat Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad to be in the race for Playoffs.

In their last game against SRH at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad DC beat SRH by 7 runs to register their second consecutive victory in the season. They defended 144 runs making it their lowest-defended total. So, today in this article we will discuss the top three lowest totals defended by DC in IPL history.

1. 152 vs RR in 2012

Riding on Morne Morkel’s amazing bowling performance Delhi Capitals (then Delhi Daredevils) pulled off an excellent one-run victory over Rajasthan Royals. After batting first DD posted a competitive total of 152/6 in 20 overs. Opener Virender Sehwag slammed a brilliant half-century as he scored 63 runs off 39 balls with the help of eight boundaries and two sixes.

While chasing 153 runs against table toppers RR got an amazing start as Opener Ajinkya Rahane and Rahul Dravid added 99 runs for the first wicket. Rahane in his innings scored 84 runs off 63 balls with the help of nine boundaries and 1 six. However, he failed to score 15 runs in the last two overs, thanks to Morkel’s amazing bowling performance. Morkel dismissed Brad Hogg in the last over to clinch a run victory over RR as they finished at 151/3 in 20 overs.

2. 150 vs RR in 2009

In the 50th match of the tournament Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) faced Rajasthan Royals at the Bloemfontein in South Africa. While batting first DC got a terrible start as both openers Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag were dismissed cheaply. Their dismissal restricted Delhi to 15-2 in 3 overs. However, after their departure, Ab de Villiers and Tilakaratne Dilshan added 87 runs for the third wicket. de Villiers in his innings scored 79 runs off 55 balls while Dilshan scored 33 runs off 41 balls to help DC post 150/3 in 20 overs.

While chasing 151 runs RR got off to a terrible start as they were restricted to 24-3 in 6.2 overs. Opener Graeme Smith, Rob Quiney and Naman Ojha departed after playing one of the worst shots of the game. After their dismissal, Johan Botha and Ravindra Jadeja tried to rescue RR but eventually failed when Jadeja was dismissed by Salvi for 24 runs off 18 balls. After his departure, RR failed to hold his nerves and was restricted to 136/9 in 20 overs.

1. 144 vs SRH in 2023

In the ongoing Indian Premier League 2023, Delhi Capitals got off to a terrible start as they lost their first five games. However, after beating KKR in their last game DC visited Hyderabad to take on SRH. After batting first DC posted a competitive total of 144/9 in 20 overs. Allrounder Axar Patel and Manish Pandey scored 34 runs each and helped DC to post a competitive total on a slowish wicket.

Chasing 145 SRH got an impressive start as they scored 75 runs in 12.3 overs after losing three wickets. However, they failed to hold their nerves in the death overs as they lost the next two wickets by scoring just 10 runs. Though, Henrich Klaasen and Washington Sundar’s brief innings SRH failed to pull the close encounter. It became the lowest total defended by DC in the history of the Indian Premier League.
