IPL: Top 3 highest successful chases in Wankhede Stadium

Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium has been one of the most iconic cricket grounds in India. This ground brings back the memories of the winning six by MS Dhoni in 2011 due to which Indian lifted the World Cup after 28 years of wait. This is the ground where Indian cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar played his last international match.

Along with these, there are many records that are made or broken on this ground. Recently, during the ongoing IPL season, Mumbai Indians almost chased a total of 215 runs against the Punjab Kings at Wankhede on Saturday. But PBKS pacer Arshdeep Singh didn’t let this happen as he scalped 2 wickets in the final over and helped his team to win the match by 13 runs. 

If MI had chased the total against PBKS it would have been the highest total that could have been chased at this ground in IPL history. Talking further, there have been thrilling run chases at Wankhede over the years. In this article, we will look at the top three highest-run chases at Wankhede in the history of the tournament.

1. Gujarat Titans vs Sunrisers Hyderabad, 2022

Defending champions Gujarat Titans are known for chasing the targets since their arrival in IPL. Last year they scripted some epic run chases throughout the season and won games from the jaws of defeat. 

One of the thrilling run chases came against Sunrisers Hyderabad in match number 40 of IPL 2022. Batting SRH posted a total of 195 runs for the loss of 6 wickets, powered by the half-centuries by Abhishek Sharma and Aiden Markram. Chasing the winning total, Wriddhiman Saha took charge of the innings by scoring 68 off 38 balls. After that, Rahul Tewatia took the innings further followed by the wickets at regular intervals. The match went down to the last over with GT needing 22 runs to win the match with Tewatia and Rashid Khan on the crease with 5 wickets in hand. 

Marco Jansen bowled the last overs for SRH. Tewatia hit Jansen for a maximum in the first ball of the over. In the very next ball, he took a single and Rashid took the strike. Rashid hit two sixes in the next three balls and now GT needed 3 runs off the last ball, and Rashid again hit a huge six at fine leg as GT pulled off a thrilling chase to continue their dominance in the season. With this, GT also achieved the third-highest successful run chase in Wankhede.

2. Delhi Capitals vs Punjab Kings, 2021

The second on the list comes the Delhi Capitals who successfully chased 196 runs against Punjab Kings in IPL 2022. Batting first PBKS posted 195 for 4 powered by the 122-run opening stand by the skipper KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal. 

Chasing the winning total, Shikhar Dhawan scored 92 runs for DC with wickets falling regularly from the other end. DC were in full control of the chase and Marcus Stoinis and Lalit Yada remained unbeaten as they scored 198 runs for the loss of 4 wickets in just 18.2 overs. Stoinis hit the winning boundary as DC registered the second highest run chase at Wankhede. 

3. MI vs PBKS, 2019

The first on the list are the five-time IPL champions and the home team Mumbai Indians who pulled off the highest successful run chase in at Wankhede in IPL history. MI successfully chased 198 runs against Punjab Kings in IPL 2019.

Batting first, PBKS posted a total of 197 runs for the loss of 4 wickets, powered by the maiden IPL century by KL Rahul who remained unbeaten on 100 runs off 66 balls hitting six fours and six sixes. 

Chasing the winning total, MI didn’t have a great start as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals. After that, Keiron Pollard took charge for MI and got out after smashing 83 runs off just 31 balls. The match went down to the last ball of the last over with MI needing 2 runs to win.
