Delhi Capitals became the sixth and final team to be eliminated from the playoff race in the current season of the Indian Premier League. The Capitals took on the Mumbai Indians in a must-win encounter at the Wankhede Stadium. It was the Mumbai Indians who won the game by 59 runs to qualify for the final four stages of the tournament.
Starting the tournament with four successive wins, DC were on a high. Their first loss of the season came against MI at home by 12 runs. Capitals rebounded with a super-over win over Rajasthan Royals. The next three games saw DC win out of their next three games of the season.
The season began to disintegrate when Delhi lost at home to Kolkata Knight Riders. In the next match against Hyderabad, the Capitals were reduced to 29 fore five before recovering and the game was eventually called off due to rains. Once the season resumed post the suspension, DC lost to Gujarat Titans by 10 wickets and then the loss to MI sealed their fate.
Here are the three reasons why DC lost to MI
3. The Final two overs, which changed the game
Delhi Capitals had bowled well, and Mumbai Indians had managed to score just 132 for the loss of five wickets. At that stage, Suryakumar Yadav was batting on 45 with Naman Dhir batting on four. Yadav began the 19th over, bowled by Kumar, to reach his fifty. Naman Dhir then smashed the bowler for two fours and two sixes as 27 runs were scored in the penultimate over. The final over, bowled by Dushmantha Chameera, produced 21 runs with Yadav hitting a couple of fours and sixes. MI managed to score 48 runs in just 12 balls to give MI the momentum going into the interval.
2. Batters playing needless shots
Faf du Plessis, who hasn’t had a great IPL 2025 season with the bat in hand. The veteran batter was expected to spearhead the batting charge against a strong MI bowling unit. Du Plessis began well with a boundary of the first over off Trent Boult to give DC a great start with the bat. Deepak Chahar outfoxed Plessis with a slower ball, and the batter’s attempted big shot was caught by New Zealand skipper Mitchell Santner.
1. Axar Patel is not playing
Ahead of the game against MI, fans were left surprised when Faf du Plessis came out for the toss. It was revealed at toss time that Axar Patel wasn’t well, which caused him to miss the game. After a slow start with the ball, Axar had started to find his groove once again and had also begun to open the bowling. The 31-year-old was also a key batter for Delhi Capitals in the middle order. Patel’s captaincy also had been praised in the early part of the season, and his absence made a huge difference against MI.
