Highest successful Test chases at The Oval

Highest successful Test chases at The Oval

England has a total of six Test venues. The Oval has been one of the three venues where a target of over 300 runs has never been successfully chased down. In this century, a team has managed to chase a target of over 200 runs only once at the venue. The highest total in Test cricket’s history has been scored at this venue. However, teams have not been very successful in chasing a target in the fourth innings here.

Let’s look at the top 3 highest successful Test chases at The Oval:

1. England 263/9 vs Australia (1902)

Australia won the toss and elected to bat in the fifth Test of Australia’s tour of England and scored 324 in the first innings. In reply, England was bundled out for 183 before Australia managed a total of 121 in the third innings and gave England a target of 263. England lost the first five wickets for just 48 even as Gilbert Jessop scored his maiden century and took the team near to the target. George Hirst remained unbeaten on 58 and England won the match by one wicket. This was the first time a team won a Test match by one wicket.

2. West Indies 255/2 vs England (1963)

England won the toss and elected to bat in the 1963 West Indies tour of England. They scored 275 runs in the first innings, while the West Indies made 246 in the second innings. In the third innings, England posted a total of 223 on the board and gave the West Indies a target of 253 Conrad Hunte (108 runs) and Rohan Kanhai (77 runs) helped the West Indies win the match by eight wickets.

3. Australia 242/5 vs England (1972)

In 1972, Australia traveled to England to play a five-match series. England were ahead of Australia by 2-1 after the finish of the fourth Test. Australia needed a win to draw the series, and that is what they did as they chased down the target of 242 runs in the fourth innings and won the match by five wickets. Dennis Lillee took a 10-wicket haul in the match, while the Chappell brothers, Ian and Greg, scored a century each in the first innings.
