Highest Successful T20I Chases: Top 3 in Cricket History

The T20 World Cup has finally culminated with India lifting their third crown. Impressive displays of batting in the first innings filled the World Cup but one thing that was missing was a successful chase of a big total. Keeping the spirit of T20 cricket in mind, we look at the three most successful run chases in T20I matches. These are games of destructive batting which took teams over the line.

Before the advent of the regular high-scoring games, West Indies chased down 232 in a T20I against South Africa in 2015, and as is the case with big scores of that era, the star was the ‘Universe Boss’ Chris Gayle. Being put into bat at the Wanderers, South Africa got to 231/7 after a blistering century from Faf Du Plessis (119 off 56) and a supporting hand from David Miller.

In reply, Gayle’s blistering 90 off just 41 balls supported ably by Marlon Samuels, who got a half-century and a late cameo from Darren Sammy helped West Indies complete the chase with four balls to spare and four wickets in hand.

2. Australia (245 by 5, 18.5 overs) beat New Zealand (243 by 6, 20 overs)

In another episode of the Trans-Tasman rivalry, Australia chased down 244 at Eden Park in Auckland. Batting first, a destructive 132-run opening partnership off just 64 balls between centurion Martin Guptill and Colin Munro pushed the Blackcaps to 243.

In response, Australia too started their chase strongly with a 121-run opening partnership between David Warner and D’Arcy Short, off just 51 balls. Blistering cameos from Glenn Maxwell and Aaron Finch, unusually batting lower down the order saw Australia cross the line with five wickets and seven balls to spare.

1. South Africa (249 by 4, 18.5 overs) beat West Indies (258 by 5, 20 overs)

The two teams feature on this list for the second time, but this time the roles were reversed. Being put in to bat at SuperSport Park, Centurion, West Indies cruised to 258 for 5 as Kyle Mayers got a brisk half-century and Romario Shepherd scored an unbeaten 41 off just 18 balls. But the hero of the innings was Johnson Charles with a sublime 118 off just 46 balls, with a massive 11 maximums. West Indies hit a whopping 21 sixes in the innings.

South Africa made light work of the chase, with Quinton De Kock scoring a 44-ball hundred, supported at the top with a 28-ball 68 from Reeza Hendricks. The 152-run partnership off just 56 balls set the base for South Africa, and Aiden Markram, unbeaten on 38 with Heinrich Klaasen on 16 took the Proteas home with six wickets in hand and seven balls to spare.
