Flashback: South Africa's last Test series in India

South Africa last played a Test series in India in 2019. It was a three-match series in which India swept the visitors. It was the first time a Test series between India and South Africa finished in a clean sweep. The three Test matches were played in Visakhapatnam, Pune, and Ranchi.

The Test series was a part of the inaugural edition of the World Test Championship. It was Rohit’s first series as a Test opener, and he smashed twin centuries (176 & 127) in the very first Test at Visakhapatnam. He followed it up with a double century (212) in Ranchi. He finished the series with 529 runs, which remains the most by any Indian opener in his debut series as an opener.

Here is a flashback of South Africa’s last Test series in India:

1. 1st Test – India won by 203 runs

India won the first Test by 203 runs. Rohit Sharma starred in the match with a century in both innings. India batted first and declared their first innings on 502 runs for the loss of seven wickets with Mayank Agarwal top scoring with 215 runs to his name. 

South Africa replied with 431 runs in their first innings with the help of centuries from Dean Elgar and Quinton de Kock even as Ravichandran Ashwin took seven wickets for India. In the second innings, India declared on 323 runs for the loss of four wickets as Rohit made 127 runs off 149 deliveries. However, the Proteas were bundled out for 191 runs in the second innings.

2. 2nd Test – India won by an innings and 137 runs 

In the second Test, India won the toss and elected to bat. Mayank made another century in the series while Virat Kohli dominated with an unbeaten knock of 254 runs, his highest individual score in Test matches. It was also the highest score by an Indian captain in Test matches before Shubman Gill made 269 runs against England.

India made 601 runs for the loss of five wickets before declaring. In response, South Africa scored 275 runs in their first innings as India enforced a follow-on, and South Africa got all out for 189 runs in the second innings, handing India the match by an innings and 137 runs.

3. 3rd Test – India won by an innings and 202 runs

India elected to bat in the third Test, and Rohit bettered his own record from the first Test. He made 212 runs in the first innings while Ajinkya Rahane made 115 runs, as they both helped India post a total of 497 runs for the loss of nine wickets before declaring the innings.

South Africa managed 162 runs in their first innings before getting bundled out. Zubayr Hamza made 62 runs and was the only batter who scored more than 40 runs for the team. India enforced a follow-on in the second innings but the Proteas could manage only 133 as the hosts won the match by an innings and 202 runs. Rohit won the Player of the Match award as well as Player of the Series award.
