Flashback: South Africa’s last Test at Eden Gardens

Flashback: South Africa's last Test at Eden Gardens

India and South Africa will be clashing in the first Test of the two-match series at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata from November 14 onwards. The second Test of the series will be played at the Barsapara Cricket Ground in Guwahati from November 22 onwards. The Tests are part of the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC 2025-27) cycle.

South Africa will be playing their first Test at the Eden Gardens after 15 years, as the last time they clashed with India at this venue was in February 2010. Let’s rewind and take a look at what happened in that test match.

South Africa had routed India in the first Test of that series in Nagpur, winning by an innings and six runs, thanks to Hashim Amla (253*) and Dale Styen’s 7/51. India needed to win the second Test to bounce back and not lose the series.

South Africa won the toss and chose to bat first in Kolkata and started well with Alviro Petersen (100) and Hashim Amla (114) scoring well. But 4/90 from Zaheer Khan and 3/64 from Harbhajan Singh restricted South Africa to 296 runs in the first innings.

India responded by scoring a huge 643/6d in the first innings as four of the Indian batters hammered centuries, with Virender Sehwag leading the way with 163. Furthermore, Sachin Tendulkar made 106, VVS Laxman got 143* while MS Dhoni smashed 132*.

Trailing by 347 runs, South Africa had a huge task at hand, and they did their best. Amla smashed another century in the Test, scoring 123* but the next best score was Ashwell Prince’s 23 as Indian bowlers ruled the roost.

Harbhajan opened the bowling and picked up 5/59, while Amit Mishra took three wickets and Ishant Sharma took two scalps as South Africa were routed for 290 runs, with India winning the Test by an innings and 57 runs.

India also levelled the series 1-1, but Hashim Amla won the Player of the Match and Player of the Series.
