ENG vs SA 2025: 3 South Africa players to watch out for in ODI series

England will host South Africa for a three-match ODI and T20I series. The first ODI of the series will be played on Tuesday, September 2, at Headingley in Leeds. The ODI series will conclude on Sunday, September 7 at The Rose Bowl in Southampton.

England last played an ODI series against the West Indies in May-June this year and won the three-match series by 3-0. On the other hand, South Africa toured Australia to play a three-match series in August and won by 2-1.

South Africa has played a total of six ODI series in England and has won just a single series. Their first and only win came in 1998. The two teams have played 29 matches in England and South Africa have won nine out of these 29 games.

1. Matthew Breetzke

Matthew Breetzke made his ODI debut during the Champions Trophy this year against New Zealand. He became the fourth Proteas batter to score a century on debut. He finished with 150 runs off 148 deliveries, which is the highest score by a batter in ODIs on debut. Breetzke is the leading run-scorer for South Africa in ODIs this year with 378 runs in four games at a strike rate of 103.27.

2. Temba Bavuma

Temba Bavuma is the second-highest run-scorer for South Africa in ODIs this year. He has hit four half-centuries in six matches this year and has 300 runs to his name at a strike rate of 85.71. He has hit 34 fours this year, which is the second-most by a Proteas batter in the  2025 calendar.

3. Keshav Maharaj

Keshav Maharaj picked six wickets in three matches against Australia in the last series at an average of 21.66. He won the first Player of the Series award of his ODI career in the series. Since the completion of the ODI World Cup 2023, Maharaj has taken 12 wickets in 10 games at an average of 36.41.
