Champions Trophy 2025: Predicting New Zealand’s Playing XI for their clash against Pakistan

In this article, we predict New Zealand’s playing XI for their upcoming clash against Pakistan. Mitchell Santner’s New Zealand will take on the hosts and defending champions Pakistan in the tournament opener of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The game will be played at the National Stadium in Karachi on February 19, at 2:30 PM (IST). The Kiwis are coming off an amazing tri-series win a few days back in Pakistan, beating the hosts in the tournament’s final.

The Blackcaps have been in a brilliant run of form in their last five ODIs, with four wins and only one defeat. Besides that, they are coming off three consecutive wins in their last three ODIs played in the ODI tri-nation series.

Mitchell Santner’s men will aim to win this game to continue their winning streak in the first game of the Champions Trophy 2025 to start the tournament on a winning note.

Given that, here we’ll look at the predicted playing XI of New Zealand for their upcoming Champions Trophy 2025 clash against Pakistan.

Openers:

Will Young

The New Zealand management will look ahead to go with the unchanged opening pair of Will Young and Devon Conway in the game against Pakistan. Young-Conway was quite decent with their performance in the tri-nation series except for a failure in the last game against Pakistan.

Conway scored crucial 48 runs, with five fours during New Zealand’s run chase of 243 runs. He alongside Young can provide a brilliant opening start for their side to post a big total in the first game of the tournament against the Men in Green.

Middle-Order:

Kane Williamson

The middle order of New Zealand is highly expected to start with the star number three batter and the modern-day batting great, Kane Williamson. He was the most successful for his side in the recently concluded ODI tri-nation series in Pakistan, scoring 225 runs in three innings, including an unbeaten appearance and an outstanding average of 112.50. He also scored a century and half-century with the bat in the series.

Williamson will be followed by in-form Daryl Mitchell at number four; he played a vital half-century knock of 57 runs to help the Kiwis chase down the target against Pakistan in the final. Besides him, Tom Latham at number five also played a crucial knock of 56 runs, with five fours. Michael Bracewell could also produce some crucial runs while batting in the lower middle order.

All-Rounder:

Glenn Phillips

The all-rounder duo of New Zealand might include the star in-form batting all-rounder Glenn Phillips alongside bowling all-rounder and skipper Mitchell Santner. Phillips was the most consistent batter for New Zealand in the tri-nation series, being unbeaten in all the appearances. He scored 154 runs in three innings, including a half-century.

On the other hand, Mitchell Santner scalped 5 wickets in three innings with the ball. Both Phillips are expected to leave an impact both with the bat and ball in the next game against Pakistan.

Bowlers:

Matt Henry

The bowling trio of New Zealand in the game against Pakistan might include three out-and-out pacers, including the likes of Matt Henry, Jacob Duffy, and Will O’Rourke. Henry and O’Rourke were the most successful bowlers for their side in the ODI tri-nation series in Pakistan. O’Rourke scalped 6 wickets in three innings, alongside Henry picking 5 wickets in two innings.

O’Rourke and Henry could pose a serious threat to the opponents with the new ball in the powerplay overs. The duo is expected to be accompanied by young pacer Jacob Duffy who might play the role of the first-change bowler for the Blackcaps.
