Champions Trophy 2025: 3 reasons why England lost to Afghanistan

England’s horror run continued in their crucial game against Afghanistan in the Champions Trophy 2025. After losing to Australia in the opening game, despite scoring 351 runs, they were in a must-win position against the Afghans. However, they failed to keep up with them and failed to reach the mark despite being so close. Afghanistan went on to win the match by eight runs and Ibrahim Zadran was awarded the Player of the Match award for his masterful knock of 177 runs. Here we look at the reasons for England’s loss.

Reasons why England lost to Afghanistan

Jos Buttler batting down the order

The English skipper has been batting in the lower-middle order in the ongoing Champions Trophy. In the two matches that he has played, Buttler has batted at 6 and has only scored 61 runs. He needs to promote himself up the order so that he gets to stay for longer at the crease. His record at number four for England is amazing, with an average of 68 in 14 innings and a strike rate of close to 168.

Batters failing to stay at the crease for long

The wicket at the Gaddafi Stadium was ideal for batters. The Afghans were able to capitalise on this and score a massive total of 325 runs in the innings. England, however, was unable to do so. Apart from Joe Root, who scored a century, nobody could do much for the English side. The lack of being able to stay at the crease and build big partnerships cost them the match.

Lack of 5th bowler

On batting-friendly wickets, teams generally prefer to have a good depth in their bowling, with good options of all rounders available to them. However, England has opted for only four full-time bowlers in the playing XI in this tournament, with Joe Root and Liam Livingstone combining for the remaining 10 overs. Jos Buttler and head coach have opted for this strange strategy and may have to give it a tough though going ahead.
