Biggest partnerships in ENG vs IND Tests

England and India have been a part of some wonderful contests up until now, in particular Test matches. There have been quite a lot of runs and wickets which have been scored and taken, respectively, by both sides.

Other than the 2025 series between England and India, there have been quite some number of big partnerships between batters. The 300-run mark has been breached a total of four times. Interestingly, all of them have come in the first innings of games.

1) Ian Bell and Kevin Pietersen (350 runs for third wicket)

The dismissal of Andrew Strauss brought Kevin Pietersen in the middle. Only 26 overs could be bowled on Day 1 due to rain. However, Ian Bell and Pietersen combined brilliantly to score freely off the Indian bowling unit for the bulk of Day 2. Both the batters had already got to their respective 150s by the time the partnership had crossed 300. Unfortunately, Pietersen missed his second double-ton of the series but Bell went onto get his double-century and ended up with his highest Test score of 235.

2) Gundappa Viswanath and Yashpal Sharma (316 runs for third wicket)

Yashpal Sharma arrived at the crease after Dilip Vengsarkar was retired hurt. Gundappa Viswanath was already well-set at the arrival of Yashpal. The duo kept the scoreboard ticking and gave the opposition minimal chances to get them. India had already surpassed 450, at which point Yashpal was dismissed after scoring 140 off 298. As of July 2025, this instance remains the only time when a partnership of more than 300 runs has been scored in Tests played at Chepauk.

3) Gautam Gambhir and Rahul Dravid (316 runs for second wicket)

Gautam Gambhir and Rahul Dravid took charge when Virender Sehwag was dismissed quite early the opening day of the second Test of the series. Both of them reached their respective fifties by the end of the second session. By the 91st over of the innings, both Gambhir and Dravid had already notched up their tons. The partnership ended when Gambhir got out on 179.
