The Lord’s is one of the most iconic venues when it comes to cricket and in particular Test cricket. It is indeed a dream for many to play at the Home of Cricket. With respect to red-ball cricket, it has had a history of favouring the pace bowlers in almost the entirety of the match due to several factors.
However, that does not mean that batters have not played well here. There have been a whole lot of memorable innings which have been played at Lord’s over the years. There have also been certain batters who have had quite a stellar record at this venue, testifying their legacy in the game.
Speaking of centuries, former English skipper Joe Root has scored the most Test tons at this venue. He recently pushed his tally to eight with his recent 104-run knock off 199 deliveries in England’s first innings of the third Test of the ongoing five-match series between England and India.
Interestingly, the aforementioned knock is the lowest 100-plus score by Root at the venue. In the 23 matches (42 innings) he has played so far at the venue, he averages 56.39 with the bat. This is significantly more than his current average (50.94).
Out of the six double tons Root has notched up in Test cricket up until now, one has come at Lord’s. The splendid knock (200* off 298) ended up coming in a nail-biting contest which ended in a narrow drawn against Sri Lanka in 2014. In general, it could be safe to assume that Root has enjoyed batting at Lord’s.
He has quite a realistic opportunity of increasing his tally till Root calls time on his Test career. Ben Stokes (three) and KL Rahul (two) are amongst the other active players on the list. However, the two have a long way to go to get to the seasoned campaigner’s current tally of eight hundreds.
