If you’re a cricket lover who enjoys a bit of pyrotechnics, like me, then you’d have missed a great show in Lahore when Mohammad Haris came out hitting – striking with purpose, he smashed his maiden T20I century to guide his team in chasing down a challenging 197 against Bangladesh. The match ended in a comfortable seven-wicket victory, sealing a 3-0 series sweep. However, the importance of this innings was far deeper than just the victory alone; it indicates the evolution of T20 batting in Pakistan.
Haris’ Century: A Statement Knock
Haris not only made runs, but he also exhibited performance art. His 107* off 46 balls was precisely the type of innings that you will remember in cricket, especially as he is the first Pakistani to score a T20I hundred without starting at the top of the order – just incredible. For Haris to hit seven sixes and eight fours, a combination of power hitting and intelligent shot selection, highlighting an ideal balance between runs scored and pressure created in the Bangladesh camp, was almost textbook.
In fact, from the commencement of the 9th over through to the end of the chase, Haris did not experience a single dot ball – top T20I performance. This innings represents more than a personal achievement for Haris, it represents a template for an assured way to chase down big totals. Pakistan has desperately sought to find a player capable of taking them out of prolonged and contestable run chases, and Haris provided this insight. His innings will inevitably create a lift in the team and a reminder that aggressive, yet smart cricket still exists, & is very much alive.
Key Support from Ayub and Nawaz
While Haris dazzled, Saim Ayub was the perfect co-star, chipping in with a slick 45 off 29 to keep the scoreboard ticking. After an early loss, Ayub settled in and found the boundary regularly and hit a couple of sixes. His partnership with Haris was vital to the chase and helped to ensure Pakistan remained up with the required run rate.
Then came Hasan Nawaz with a brilliantly aggressive 26 off 13 balls, which ignited the middle overs. His hitting – including two of the aforementioned sixes – came at an important time in the game, scoring quickly for Pakistan, raising the run rate, and relieving some pressure. Importantly, when Nawaz got out, he left Pakistan well connected to the run chase.
These three players have shown the importance of partnerships in T20 run chases. It is not just about an individual making a big score, but being able to build partnerships, get a strike rate, and then knowing when to attack. The mix of destruction and stability (with other players willing to assist) seems to be a desirable formula.
Bangladesh’s Fight and Pakistan’s Tight Bowling Finish
Bangladesh displayed bravery in posting their new record T20 IF score of 196 for 6, with the innings anchored by Parvez Hossain Emon (66) and supported by Tanzid Hasan (42). They launched the innings like a rocket, piling up a 110-run opening stand. Bangladesh’s position afforded them opportunities to get off to a great start that would allow them to accumulate a massive total, but as the innings went on, during the death bowling, discipline kicked in for Pakistan, shutting down the scoring with a tight 46-run yield in the last five overs.
Abbas Afridi was admirable with his variations, aggressiveness, and wicket-taking ability, slowing down the run rate while Bangladesh chased runs. Bangladesh’s middle order committed to building but fell short of 200. The match finished with Bangladesh showing plenty of power, but the a need for improvement in consistency and depth to be able to complete the matches against the top teams.
