Asia Cup 2025: 3 Sri Lanka players to watch out for

The Asia Cup 2025 will begin on September 9 with games to be played in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The final will take place in Dubai on September 28.

The competition will include eight teams divided into two groups. India, Pakistan, the United Arab Emirates, and Oman are in Group A, and Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Hong Kong, and Sri Lanka are in Group B.

Sri Lanka won the 2022 T20 Asia Cup in the UAE and is familiar with the conditions. They will play Bangladesh on September 13, Hong Kong on September 15, and Afghanistan on September 18 in the tournament’s group stages.

Here are 3 Sri Lanka players to watch out for in the Asia Cup 2025:

1. Pathum Nissanka

Pathum Nissanka

Pathum Nissanka has been the most exciting Sri Lankan batter across formats lately. The only Sri Lankan ODI double-centurion, Nissanka has excelled in T20Is as well. He has 1917 runs a strike rate of 122.57 in 67 T20Is with a best of 90.

Nissanka is known for his ability to shoulder the Sri Lanka innings while others bat around him. His batting style is based on timing, placement, and composure rather than sheer power. He loves playing aerial shots in powerplays and has the technique to handle the best of spinners in middle overs.

2. Dushmantha Chameera

Dushmantha Chameera

Dushmantha Chameera will be the most experienced pacer for Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup. He has 61 wickets in 57 T20Is for Sri Lanka since his debut in 2015. Though injuries have hampered Dushmantha’s career, he hasn’t compromised with his pace and still bowls at near 150 kph in white-ball cricket.

Chameera’s biggest strengths are bowling at an express pace even on death wickets and surprising the batters with a bouncer or yorkers even in powerplay overs. Chameera also possesses a slower delivery and other changes of pace in times of need in death overs and is overall a complete package to be in Sri Lanka’s playing XI.

3. Wanindu Hasaranga

Wanindu Hasaranga

Wanindu Hasaranga is the best spinner in T20Is at the moment. He has 131 wickets in just 79 T20Is at an economy of 6.98. He also has vast experience playing across the world in T20 leagues and has captained Sri Lanka as well.

Hasaranga is a master of the mystery bowling world. Though a leg-break bowler, Hasaranga has incorporated multiple variations in his bowling to keep the batters guessing all the time. He bowls at a fast pace, giving the batters little time to react.
