3 West Indies players who might retire after ODI World Cup 2023

The two-time World Cup champions of 1975 and 1979, West Indies are currently going through quite a bit of miserable condition in international cricket. One of the mightiest teams of the decades of the 1970s and 1980s are in a situation right now to play the World Cup qualifiers to secure their place in the upcoming ODI World Cup 2023 to be held in India later this year.

Meanwhile, the selection committee of West Indies Cricket Board headed by chief selector and former legendary cricketer Desmond Haynes has announced the squad for the World Cup qualifiers for the main event of the ODI World Cup 2023.

Apart from that, the West Indies squad also has the names who may have their swan song in international cricket after the end of the ODI World Cup 2023 if the Caribbean side make it successfully into the main round of the 13th edition of the prestigious cricket quadrennial.

With that said, here we’ll have a look at the three West Indies cricketers who could hang their boots in international cricket after the ODI World Cup 2023 in India.

1. Jason Holder

One of the senior most players in the current squad of West Indies, Jason Holder is active in international cricket for West Indies for more than the last 10 years. He made his first appearance in international cricket during the Perth ODI against Australia on the 1st of February 2013.

Since then, he has played 62 Tests, 133 ODIs, and 51 T20Is for West Indies and also captained the side in a lot of international tournaments for a long period of time. Looking up at his current form and the time he has spent in international cricket, Holder might announce his retirement from international cricket after an appearance in the ODI World Cup 2023.

2. Sheldon Cottrell

The 33-year-old Jamaican pacer Sheldon Cottrell has been playing for West Indies in international cricket since 2013. Cottrell played his first international match in the Kolkata Test against India when the Caribbean side was on the tour of India for the Test series. Since then, Cottrell could represent West Indies only in 2 Tests alongside 38 ODIs and 45 T20Is at the highest level of the game.

In an utter dismay for him, Cottrell is not included in the squad of West Indies for the qualifiers for the ODI World Cup 2023 to be played in India. It also translates into the fact that Cottrell could hang his boots in international cricket after the completion of the ODI World Cup 2023.

3.  Nicholas Pooran

The Trinidadian wicketkeeper-batter Nicholas Pooran impressed everyone with his stellar performances in the recently-concluded edition of the Indian Premier League 2023. He scored 358 runs with two half-centuries in the 15 innings of the 15 matches he played for the Lucknow Super Giants in the 16th edition of the Indian Premier League.

The 27-year-old wicketkeeper-batter has been trusted by the selection committee of West Indies for the World Cup qualifiers for the main edition of the ODI World Cup 2023 in India. Notably, Pooran has played 54 ODIs and 75 T20Is at the highest level of the game.

Considering his inclination towards the franchise T20 cricket leagues, the star Southpaw could retire from international cricket after one more appearance for the Caribbean side in the ODI World Cup 2023.
