3 Reasons Why WF Lost to LS in the 6th Match of The Hundred Men 2025

3 Reasons Why WF Lost to LS in the 6th Match of The Hundred Men 2025

In the warm Cardiff night air, Welsh Fire set out to chase 164 runs against London Spirit. Jonny Bairstow gave hope with aggressive sixes and fours, but key moments slipped away, and despite their fight, Fire fell short by 8 runs.

The Middle-Order Collapse That Shattered Momentum

Firstly, Fire’s middle-order batting collapse was the final nail in their coffin. The Fire started brightly, but once Steven Smith fell cheaply early on for just 3 runs, they witnessed wicket after wicket tumble as though they were dominoes falling. The middle order failed to establish any meaningful partnerships either, Tom Abell, Tom Kohler-Cadmore, and Saif Zaib all going down cheaply, and suddenly the scoreboard read a breathless 39/5. Cricket-wise, this middle-order meltdown pretty much sucked the momentum completely out of the innings.

The Fire’s big guns like Bairstow and Wells were trying to hold the innings together, but with key wickets developing at quite regular intervals, their run chase was starting to wane every retreating ship without enough lifeboats; that’s how it contributed to a teetering ship rather than a cricket innings. The complete lack of consolidation throughout this middle phase ultimately meant they never really looked like threatening the Spirit’s total.

Spirit’s Bowling Blitz Led by Hull and Worrall

As for the bowling, Josh Hull and Daniel Worrall led the authorities nicely for London Spirit. Hull’s match figures of 2 for 36 were about waay more than just the wickets; they were about the timing of both his breakthroughs and removing both Kane Williamson and the dangerous Jamie Smith was like pulling the rug out from under the Fire, choking their run rate and snuffing out any sense they could get close enough for a sustained fightback.

Worrall also bowled intelligently, with the scalps of Luke Wells and Saif Zaib coming at key times; however, the pressure created by the Spirit bowling group made the main difference here. Ultralow extras, and each over felt like a siege on Fire’s chase, forcing them to earn each run. When the bowling operates as a ten, batting becomes extremely unpleasant, which was evident when Fire’s middle order folded under the pressure.

Failure to Adapt and Finish Under Pressure

Lastly, situational factors were coy in their influence on this nail-biting loss. Fire is going to rue their inability to finish the innings with the composed precision of a surgeon. Bairstow’s excellent 86 is a spark of brilliance; yet, without a doubt, cricket is a team sport. Bairstow was practically left to steer this ship on his own in the last overs, losing teammates at the most inopportune time. For sure, there was also a hint of over-reliance on star players. Beyond Bairstow, the firepower fizzled tubby quickly.

There were a few fielding blunders, but it appeared the pressure of chasing under lights on a dodgy Cardiff wicket rattled the Fire batsmen just enough. Batting on a pitch with low bounce isn’t easy, and the Spirit’s clever use of field placements and bowling plans kept Fire trying to guess with every ball thrown down. Fire’s batting unit failed to adapt.

Welsh Fire’s efforts to chase down a target fell short today, thanks to a consistent and no-nonsense performance from the London Spirit bowling attack and a mid-order collapse from Welsh Fire. Jonny Bairstow was scoring freely early, but the London Spirit put together a complete team performance to hold on by 8 runs at Cardiff, with a good crowd behind them.
