3 Reasons Why SL Lost to BAN in the 1st Super Fours Match of T20 Asia Cup 2025

3 Reasons Why SL Lost to BAN in the 1st Super Fours Match of T20 Asia Cup 2025

Under the sparkling Dubai lights, Sri Lanka looked set for a resounding victory in the Super Fours of the Asia Cup 2025. Sure, Dasun Shanaka waved the flag for the rest of the team with a dazzling 64 off just 37 balls, but they still only managed 168/7 — a score that probably would have been defendable on most other days. The innings had its moments of power, especially in the back end, where Shanaka swung for the fences like a man obsessed and pushed the scoring above eight an over.

A Middle-Order That Stopped Rotating the Scoreboard

At the beginning of the innings, Sri Lanka started brightly with Pathum Nissanka (22) and Kusal Mendis (34) making a good start at 58/2 after 8 overs. The run rate then had to take a break. Kamil Mishara contributed 5 runs off 11 balls, while Kusal Perera was dismissed in the 14th over, reducing the scoring rate. The run-out of Charith Asalanka left Shanaka to bat on with little assistance. The middle order provided some sporadic support but offered little help to Shanaka. In T20, there is often a need for the innings to reach a momentum, and without deficiency, Sri Lanka lacked direction, even with a brilliant knock from Shanaka.

Opposition Match-Winners — Saif and Hridoy Stole Momentum

Sri Lanka’s batting structure broke down with partnerships, while Bangladesh’s brilliant chase had multiple all-round performances. The anchor of the chase was Saif Hassan, who played a top-order role, making 61 runs from 45 balls with some smart hitting and aggressive batting, but he also took two crucial catches to dismiss Nissanka and Mendis, both of which impactfully slowed down the progress of Sri Lanka’s innings. Towhid Hridoy made 58 runs from 37 balls with 4 fours and 2 sixes in a game-winning innings, which jump-started the chase for Bangladesh, but Hasaranga also saw the end of both Saif and Litton Das. Outside of Hasaranga’s 2/22 and a late innings spell of Shanaka, the Sri Lankan bowlers could not recover from the onslaught.

Fielding Lapses and Situational Misreads

In a closely contested T20 match, it is ultimately the fine margins that decide the match, and that’s where the unfolding of events caught Sri Lankas in between. Sri Lanka’s fielding was too lackadaisical; what should have been singles were turned into artefact twos, moments of pressure turned into relief overs. Thushara’s 42 from 4 overs and Wellalage’s worse than expensive overs ensured that the squeeze never really came. Even when Hridoy cavalierly threw away his wicket after being a full toss from Chameera with the score of 159/4, Sri Lanka didn’t convert that into an opportunity to skewer Bangladesh. Shamim Hossain and Jaker Ali seemingly suddenly found the boundary, and it was clear from very early on that Bangladesh didn’t need a last-ball miracle.

Sri Lanka’s downfall was not simply a catastrophic collapse, but rather a death by a 1,000 cuts. The inability of the middle order to deliver, Bangladesh’s duo of remarkable performances and careless execution in the key moments added up to a result they let slip
