3 reasons why Shreyas Iyer was not retained by KKR for ahead of IPL 2025

3 reasons why Shreyas Iyer was not retained by KKR for ahead of IPL 2025

In a move that has sparked considerable debate among fans and analysts, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have officially decided not to retain Shreyas Iyer for the upcoming IPL 2025 season. Iyer, who led KKR to their third IPL title in the 2024 season and has been a central figure in the team, now finds himself headed to the auction pool.

The decision comes amid speculation that Iyer was reportedly not happy with the management. However, here we are with 3 reasons that reportedly led to the decision which has now shocked many former cricketers including Punjab Kings coach Ricky Ponting.

3. Steep Retention Price Demand

Shreyas Iyer’s demand for a significant pay hike reportedly led to tough decisions for KKR. As sources reveal, Iyer sought a hefty retention amount of INR 30 crore from the franchise. While his leadership contributed to KKR’s success in previous seasons, the franchise was reluctant to meet this high figure. They concluded that Iyer’s price tag wasn’t justified given his performance and the team’s overall budget considerations, which made retaining him financially unfeasible.

2. Lower-than-Ideal performance in T20 Format

Performance metrics also played a part in KKR’s decision. Despite a respectable run tally exceeding 3000, Iyer’s strike rate of 127.48 has been seen as below par in the context of modern T20 cricket, where power-hitting and aggressive run rates are highly valued. Compared to players like Rinku Singh and Andre Russell, known for their dynamic and fast-paced gameplay, Iyer’s strike rate didn’t align with KKR’s vision for an explosive batting lineup. As T20 demands evolve, franchises are favouring players who can score at 140+ strike rates, leaving Iyer’s more conventional approach less fitting for KKR’s aggressive strategy.

1. Iyer’s Desire to Move On

Perhaps the most significant factor was Iyer’s reported interest in leaving KKR for fresh opportunities. The departure of key management figures who had supported him in recent seasons may have contributed to Iyer’s sentiment. With the backing of that original support system no longer in place, Iyer appears to be looking for a team with a setup that aligns more closely with his aspirations and where he may see a stronger role. Former New Zealand pacer Simon Doull weighed in, suggesting that KKR made the right choice as Iyer’s drive to leave would have impacted team cohesion.
