3 Reasons Why PAK Lost to WI in the 3rd ODI of Pakistan tour of West Indies 2025

3 Reasons Why PAK Lost to WI in the 3rd ODI of Pakistan tour of West Indies 2025

On January 18th, 2019, the stage was set in Tarouba for what many hoped would be an exciting contest for Pakistan to chase a moderate target of 295 runs. Pakistan commenced their chase with optimism, but the pitch soon began to unravel and reveal its demons. The fantastic chase soon turned into a nightmare, as Pakistan were bowled out for 92 in under 30 overs. The West Indies stormed to a thumping triumph, sealing the deal with a massive 202-run gulf. What had gone catastrophically wrong for Pakistan in this third ODI? Here are three main reasons why this calamitous defeat transpired.

Catastrophic Batting Collapse

Under pressure, Pakistan’s top order, normally the team’s foundation, splintered like twigs. It became clear quickly when Saim Ayub, the opener, was dismissed without score, caught from Jayden Seales’s malicious bowling, and the nightmare had begun. Ayub was the first of several who failed to read the pace and movement served with a bit of help from the conditions: Abdullah Shafique departed cheaply, as did captain Mohammad Rizwan.

Babar’s stay was short-lived, leaving Pakistan wobbling like a chair with one leg at 23 for 4. To make matters worse, Pakistan had produced no notable partnership; it was as if they did not have a handle on the extent of the pressure now mounted on the middle-order batting to live up to the expectation. Pakistan created its own grave, deep and fast.

Jayden Seales’ Game-Changing Spell

Every ball from Seales for the West Indies carried a message: blink, and your wicket’s gone. The young bowler’s spell epitomized speed, discipline, and unforgiving aggression. Seales’ figures of 6 wickets for 18 runs destroyed the Pakistan batting line-up, cutting through both the middle and lower order like a scalpel. Seales did not bowl at pace; he bowled from the heart and with intent. With each wicket taken, Seales rang the bell; there would be no easy runs today.

Pakistan’s batsmen barely got a sniff of the ball, as Seales was continually making them play on the back foot, bouncing back and forth with lengths and angles like a magician pulling rabbits from a hat. His brilliance made what might have been a tricky chase, an impossible chase in no time at all.

Lack of Adaptability and Overreliance on Key Players

By failing to adapt and excessively relying on a few individuals, Pakistan sealed its fate. When the pitch offered some seam and swing early on, Pakistan’s batsmen did not adapt to the conditions: instead of playing patiently or trying to rotate the strike, they looked agitated and rushed and gave wickets away cheaply. The West Indies showed how to take advantage of the moment.

When the West Indies batsmen had their innings, the Pakistan bowlers conceded questionable extras and boundaries that gave the hosts momentum, while managing an acceptable run rate. By the same token, the lower order crumbled under pressure, who were unable to add precious runs, or even to annoy the opposition, reflective of the other team’s issues of adapting to conditions and a demanding situation.

Overall, Pakistan’s hold on the match crumbled, slipping away like sand in their grasp. A brutal batting collapse, merciless bowling from Jayden Seales, and not adjusting to the conditions were too much for Pakistan to overcome. The West Indies showed grit and style while Pakistan’s hopes were crushed in a heavy wave.
