The Indian Premier League (IPL) has been one of the most iconic franchise leagues in the world of cricket and it was great to see that we got to see some new teams like Lucknow SuperGiants (LSG) make their debut 2-years ago. Their team had made it to the playoffs of the IPL for two consecutive years and impressed a lot of people. But this season saw them having one of their underwhelming performances in the league so far. There is no doubt there will be a lot of thinking they will have to do going forward into the auction for IPL 2025.
Some players will most likely be retained by the new franchise and there might be some players they will let go as well. One of the players who will be debated to be released from the franchise is Devdutt Paddikal. There is no doubt that the left-handed batter is one of the promising players in the setup right now, but it looks highly unlikely that the 24-year-old will be playing for LSG next year.
Without further ado here are the 3 reasons the franchise might let him go:
1. Plenty of top players to retain from the franchise
There is no doubt that Paddikal is one of the talented southpaws who has shown in his early years that he can play some big knocks, but with LSG having a lot of variety and talent in the squad they might have to let him go. With the likes of Marcus Stoinis and Nicholas Pooran being the top performers and all-rounders like Deepak Hooda and Krunal Pandya bringing depth and variety into the team, there is a big chance he will be sidelined and released.
2. Could not live up to the price tag
Paddikal was bought by the LSG franchise for 7.75cr last year and his performances in the season were quite underwhelming. The Karnataka batter could only score 38 runs in the 7 matches he played at an average of 5.43. It is safe to say that this could be enough to completely release him from the team where the franchise could increase its budget to buy more players, who might be a better replacement than him.
3. Strike rate issues not helping him
The other reason that people tend to overlook is the strike rate of players. Especially in T20 cricket where it plays a major role. Paddikal’s strike rate of 123.13 has been an issue with him and in a fast-moving format like T20 cricket, the franchise could see that as a problem as it hurts the flow of runs in the game. This could be another reason the southpaw could see himself out of the squad completely going forward into the mega auction.
