3 Reasons Why HKG Lost to BAN in the 3rd Match of T20 Asia Cup 2025

3 Reasons Why HKG Lost to BAN in the 3rd Match of T20 Asia Cup 2025

In Abu Dhabi, we had a neat, tense evening, and Hong Kong had a reason to be hopeful. Their innings total of 143/7 after 20 overs – with Zeeshan Ali scoring 30 (off 34), Nizakat Khan getting a score of 42 (off 40), and Yasim Murtaza scoring a lively 28 (off 19) – looked like it was defendable. But a terrific, efficient chase by Litton Das (59 off 39) saw Bangladesh chase down the total in just 17.4 overs (Bangladesh won by 7 wickets with 14 balls remaining). It highlighted how close it can be. It was small details, not collapse, that brought this match to a conclusion.

The middle-order failed to turn tidy into terrifying

Hong Kong had a platform but not the second gear. Zeeshan and Nizakat both stabilised, but neither provided the gear to force Bangladesh into defensive fields regularly with some lifting stroke play. Yasim’s cameo indicated intent late, but an important run-out stole momentum, and losing 2 wickets with 134 runs and 5 wickets down limited any proper flourish at the end of their innings. Hong Kong had 14 extras in their innings, with 9 wides included, but they did not turn those gifts into the sort of runs required for a 160-plus total in which opposing bowlers would have felt required to take some unnecessary risks.

Litton Das took the sting out of the chase

When Litton has momentum, he makes the chase seem inevitable. His 59 off 39 included some sensible singles and some well-timed boundaries, keeping the scoreboard ticking at pace; Litton was in control of the tempo, rather than letting nerves take hold. Towhid Hridoy’s 35 not out helped keep the calm and provided good rotation of the strike, while Litton punished any loose bowling. While Ateeq Iqbal had a bright spell with 14 runs in 3.4 overs and two wickets (including Tanzid’s wicket, who was first, and later a key batter), no Hong Kong bowler had a stretch that put any sustained pressure on a settled Litton- there just was no answer to that strike-rate of 151 from the captain as Hong Kong’s bowling could go.

Death bowling lapses and costly extras

The volatility of T20s is in the margins, and Hong Kong gave up marginal stuff. Aside from Ateeq’s tidy spell, other bowlers went for runs at expensive periods: Yasim gave away 39 in his four overs, and Ayush Shukla gave away 32 runs in three overs to go 18 separate deliveries for 71 runs. The 17 extras in the chase, including nine wide calls and two no-balls, were even more damaging, which aided rotation in the field and took the pressure off needing the big shots. You want to take even more pressure off? Don’t let the fielding moments that compress pressure happen: Hong Kong simply does not create the stops and catches that serve to swing tight matches.
