3 reasons why England lost the 1st ODI against India

3 reasons why England lost the 1st ODI against India

England cricket team began the three-match ODI series against India with a four-wicket loss in the opening game of the series. Shubman Gill and Axar Patel’s batting ensured that the hosts took a 1-0 lead in the series. With the Champions Trophy 2025 edition around the corner, Jos Buttler and Brendon McCullum in particular will be concerned.

Skipper Jos Buttler speaking at the end of the game said “Disappointed not to win the game. We got off to a fantastic start in the powerplay but we lost wickets. Another 40-50 runs could have been handy with the way the wicket played towards the end. The guys started well. The game was in the balance at that point, but credit to Shreyas Iyer to build that partnership. We have to play better for longer”

Here are the three reasons why England had lost the first ODI vs India

3-Losing wickets in a cluster

Jos Buttler’s men began the first ODI on strong footing as the openers went after the Indian bowlers. Phil Salt and Ben Duckett added 75 runs for the opening wicket in just under nine overs. Phil Salt’s run-out for 43 runs changed the game as the visitors lost three wickets in a space of seven balls. Even in the middle overs, the wickets of Jos Buttler and Jacob Bethell in quick succession changed the course of the game towards India.

2- Lack of support for Adil Rashid in the spin department

Veteran spinner Adil Rashid bowled well and completed his quota of 10 overs for 49 runs. His only wicket was that of Axar Patel who had scored 52 and put India on the course of a huge win. Jacob Bethell, Liam Livingstone, and Joe Root bowled the other ten overs. Bethell picked the wicket of Shreyas Iyer but bowled only three overs before being removed from the attack. Livingstone bowled five overs and gave away 28 runs without taking a wicket. Buttler will hope more from his support bowlers and hope that they can give Rashid the much-needed support to break India’s batting order.

1- Lack of third seam option

Jofra Archer has been impressive since his return to cricket and his performance on Thursday was yet another splendid effort. Archer bowled with pace and left the Indian batting unit in discomfort as he picked 1/39 from his 7 overs. Saqib Mahmood bowled 6.4 overs to pick 2/47 and showed great maturity with the ball. Brydon Carse who was the third seamer in the team was carted for 52 runs from his five overs which turned out to be a huge issue for the tourists. England will hope that they can rectify this issue ahead of the second game in Cuttack on Sunday.
