3 reasons why Ashwani Kumar can do a good job for Mumbai Indians in the remainder of IPL 2025

The 12th game of IPL 2025 between Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders saw the hosts post an easy eight-wicket win. Mumbai Indians took just 12.5 overs to beat KKR and register their first win of the season. Ryan Rickelton led the chase with the bat and scored his first half-century for the five-time IPL winners. 

MI’s star of the day was young Ashwani Kumar who stole the show with the ball as he claimed four wickets from his three overs. Kumar picked 4/24 and broke the back of KKR’s batting line-up. The young pacer was also given the player of the match award for his efforts with the ball.

3. Good death bowler 

Ashwani Kumar showed his skills with the ball against a class of batters like Manish Pandey and Andre Russell. The left-arm seamer is known to be a very good death bowler with his ability to bowl the Yorkers and full-length deliveries that make the batters uncomfortable. Kumar is also more than useful while bowling the slower balls which can be Goldust for MI during the season. His delivery to dismiss Manish Pandey is a fair example of the skills he possesses with the ball.

2. Can swing the new ball with decent speeds

Deepak Chahar and Trent Boult bowled well in the game against KKR on Monday. The duo shared three wickets amongst themselves. Deepak Chahar picked two wickets while Boult ended with a single scalp. In case, MI wants to experiment with the new ball and rest either of the senior statesmen, then Ashwani Kumar can be an ideal candidate for the new ball. The 23-year-old can swing the ball away from the right-handers and his natural lengths can get early wickets, especially in the powerplay overs.

1. Lack of knowledge about him in opposition camp

Not many have seen Ashwani Kumar bowl before he took to the field against KKR on Monday. The 23-year-old had played a handful of games for Punjab and was a huge fixture in the local T20 tournament in Punjab. This unknown factor will work out well in favour of Kumar in the early part of his IPL campaign. Mumbai Indians skipper Hardik Pandya will do well to use the pacer as a surprise weapon in the next few games of the season.
