Mohammed Shami has played 64 Tests thus far, taking 229 wickets at an average of 27.71, with a best bowling of 6/56. He is yet to take a ten-wicket haul in Test cricket, with a best match bowling of 9/118. He was part of India’s first-ever Test series win in Australia in 2018-19 and did well when India drew the 2021 Test series 2-2 in England.

Mohammed Shami made his Test debut for India in 2013 against West Indies at his home ground, Eden Gardens in Kolkata. This was the famed farewell series of Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar. West Indies won the toss and chose to bat first, scoring 234 runs in the first innings with Marlon Samuels top-scoring with 65 runs. Mohammed Shami shone with 4/71 in his first outing in Tests.

India responded with 453, with Rohit Sharma making 177 on debut and R Ashwin making 124. In their second innings, West Indies were blown away for 168 runs courtesy of Shami’s brilliant bowling. Shami bowled superbly on the Kolkata pitch, taking 5/47 in the second innings and nine wickets in the match. India won the Test by an innings and 51 runs, and Shami announced himself to the Test world.

6/56 vs Australia, Perth 2018

This was the only Test India lost in the 2018/19 series against Australia Down Under. India had won the first Test in Adelaide, but Australia made a huge comeback in Perth. Australia posted 326 in the first innings with Marcus Harris, Aaron Finch, and Travis Head making fifties. India responded with 283 runs, with Virat Kohli making 123 and Ajinkya Rahane 51, while Nathan Lyon took a five-wicket haul.

Shami stepped up when India needed to keep Australia to a low total in the second innings, claiming wickets of Aaron Finch, Usman Khawaja, Shaun Marsh, and Travis Head to finish with 6/56 in the second innings. Shami’s effort meant that India bowled Australia out for 243 runs. Needing 287 runs to win, India were bowled out for 140 and lost the game by 146 runs.

5/28 vs South Africa, Johannesburg 2018

India were looking to avoid a whitewash, having lost both the first two Tests of this three-Test series. India posted 187 runs in the first innings, with Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane making fifties. Then Jasprit Bumrah picked up a five-wicket haul as South Africa were routed for 194 runs. In their second innings, India managed to put on 247 runs on a treacherous pitch, with Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane scoring 40s to set South Africa a target of 241.

Dean Elgar (86*) and Hashim Amla (52) were the only Proteas batters to withstand the Indian pace attack’s assault. Mohammed Shami was at the center of it, taking 5/28, blowing away the South African batting for 177 and winning the game for India by 63 runs.
