3 England batters who can be the top scorer in the upcoming Test series against India

England, under the captaincy of Ben Stokes, are set to host India in the upcoming highly anticipated five-match Test series, starting next month. While India have already announced their young squad led by Shubman Gill, England are yet to announce their squad for the all-important home Test series.

Meanwhile, England recently played a one-off Test against Zimbabwe in order to gear up their preparations for the Test series against India. The Englishmen won this four-day Test by an innings and 45 runs. It included a few brilliant batting performances from England batters, who will also be seen in the red-ball series against India.

With that said, here we’ll have a look at the 3 England batters who can be the leading run-scorer in the upcoming Test series against India.

1. Joe Root

Joe Root

The former England skipper and modern-day batting legend, Joe Root, recently achieved the historic milestone of 13,000 Test runs in his career. He joined the elite list and became only the fifth batter to achieve this feat. Meanwhile, Root has been enjoying the ‘form of his life’ for the last couple of Test series.

In the recent year from May 1, 2024, till now, the 34-year-old has scored 700 runs in 11 innings in England, with an amazing average of 70.0, hitting three centuries and three half-centuries. He is also the leading run-scorer for England in England during this period. He is expected to end up as the leading run-scorer in the upcoming five-match Test series against India, alongside breaking some new batting records in the Tests.

2. Ollie Pope

Ollie Pope

Star number three batter Ollie Pope has been in a brilliant run of form with the bat for England, when it comes to performing in the English conditions. He has been one of the few batters who have delivered consistently for England in the last year. Pope is also the second leading run-scorer in Tests for England in home conditions during this period. He also smashed a century in the recently concluded one-off Test against Zimbabwe, scoring 171 runs off just 166 balls, with 24 fours and two sixes, with a brilliant strike rate of 103.01.

The 27-year-old has scored 601 runs in 11 innings, with a brilliant batting average of 54.6, hitting two half-centuries and three half-centuries. He can also find it quite easy to score runs against the young Indian bowling attack, except for the star pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah. So, the Chelsea-born batter might also be among the leading run-scorers in the England vs India Test series.

3. Ben Duckett

The in-form opener Ben Duckett impressed everyone with his brilliant batting performance in the recent appearance against Zimbabwe in the four-day Test match. He smashed 140 runs off just 134 balls, with 20 fours and two sixes, with an impressive strike rate of 104.47. Besides that, he also ranks third in the list of the leading run-scorers for England in Tests in home conditions.

Duckett has scored 504 runs in 12 innings, with a decent batting average of 45.82 and an impressive batting strike rate of 94.74. He has scored three half-centuries and a century with the bat during this time frame. Duckett’s form might be a big concern for India to deal with, which also makes him the potential leading run-scorer in the five-match Test series.
