Predicting England’s playing XI for second Test vs India

England began their home series against India and the new World Test Championship cycle in fine style. The hosts won the game by five wickets as they chased down the 371-run needed in the final hour of play. Joe Root was not out 53 while wicketkeeper Jamie Smith scored 44 not out from 55 balls. Smith was the batter who hit the winning runs when he smashed Jadeja for two sixes in successive balls.

Edgbaston is a venue where the English have enjoyed a fair share of success over the years in the longest format. The likes of Joe Root and Ben Stokes, in particular, have enjoyed tremendous support from the home fans at this particular venue. The last time England took on India at this venue was in 2022, and they went gone to win the game. Even in that game, the English side had chased over 370 runs to win the encounter.

Here is the likely XI for England vs India

Top order- Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett

Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett

Zak Crawley had a mixed bag game in Leeds with scores of four and 65 in the game. Crawley, though, played a key role for the home team while chasing the massive target set by India as he added 188 for the first wicket. Ben Duckett, on the other hand, has been a perpetual thorn in India’s flesh for a while now. The left-handed batter scored 62 and 149 to make it a game to remember with the bat. Both Crawley and Duckett batted well in the second innings to take the game away from the Indian bowlers on the final day.

Middle Order – Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook

Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook

Ollie Pope began the Test series in fine style, scoring 106 runs in the first innings and eight in the second innings. Pope, who made his Test debut against India in 2018, has been batting well, but the home team and their fans will want him to show more consistency. Joe Root, as usual, has been unruffled with the bat and was at his best in the second innings in front of his home fans. Root is just 71 runs away from scoring 3000 Test runs versus India. Harry Brook was out for 99 in the first innings of the Leeds Test and followed it up with a duck in the second. Brook has been in smashing form with the bat and will be a key batter for the home team, and could put the Indian side under pressure in Edgbaston.

Lower-order- Ben Stokes, Jamie Smith, Chris Woakes

Skipper Ben Stokes scored a total of 53 runs in the opening Test match, but it was with the ball that Stokes had done the damage. The 34-year-old had picked up four wickets in the first innings of the game and one wicket in the second. Stokes has been finding his second wind as a pacer since coming back from a long injury layoff. Jamie Smith was at his best with the bat and also did well behind the stumps to take four catches. Chris Woakes played a key role with the bat in the first innings of the Leeds Test, scoring 38, and also took one wicket in the game.

Tail enders – Brydon Carse, Josh Tongue, Shoaib Bashir

Brydon Carse bowled with good control and decent pace in Leeds to take four wickets, with three of them coming in the second innings. Carse also scored 22 key runs with the bat and added 55 runs for the eight runs with Woakes in the last game. Josh Tongue grabbed seven wickets in the game, with four in the first innings and three in the second innings. Tongue bowled with good pace and was seen clocking speeds at over 140KPH during the game. Shoaib Bashir had a slow game as the pitch was aiding the pacers more. The young spinner bowled 49 overs in the game and picked up three wickets for a total of 190 runs. Bashir might find some help and purchase the wicket in Edgbaston on the final few days of the game.
