Oval Invincibles cruised to a stunning 39-run win defeating Welsh Fire in Match 5 of The Hundred 2022 at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff on Sunday. Opener Will Jacks played a key role in this victory of Oval Invincibles. He was adjudged player of the match after playing a match-winning innings of 81 runs off 45 balls.

Welsh Fire captain Josh Cobb won the toss and elected to field first sending Oval Invincibles to bat. Oval Invincibles collected a huge score of 158 runs after losing 5 wickets on the stipulated 100 balls.

Oval Invincibles did not start well after losing 2 wickets for 22 runs after coming down to bat. Opener Jason Roy (10) returned to the dressing room after being the victim of George Scrimshaw for only 16 runs. After a while, Rilee Rossouw got out after scoring 5 runs off just 4 balls.

Then opener Will Jacks and wicket-keeper batsman Sam Billings put on a 29-run partnership for the 3rd wicket to bring the team back into the match. Sam Curran came to the wicket when Billings was dismissed for 14 runs off 13 balls. Jacks added 56 runs to the scoreboard with Curran for the 4th wicket. Sam Curran returned to the dressing room after getting out by Adam Zampa with 26 runs off 23 balls.

When Sam Curran returned for the team’s 107 runs, there were still 15 balls left in the innings. Jacks and Sunil Narine were on the wicket. They made a devastating partnership of 47 runs off 14 balls together for the 5th wicket. Where Jacks batted aggressively with the bat. Jacks alone scored 41 runs in this pair of 47 runs.

With only 1 ball remaining in the innings, Jacks returned to the pavilion after playing a stormy innings of 81 runs from 45 balls with 7 fours and 4 sixes. On the other hand, Narine remained unbeaten with 6 runs off 5 balls. Tom Curran (4) remained unbeaten with a boundary on the last ball of the wicket.

Ryan Higgins took the maximum number of 2 wickets for Welsh Fire. Apart from this, Adam Zampa, George Scrimshaw, and David Paine took 1 wicket each.

Chasing a challenging target of 159, the Oval Invincibles bowlers put Welsh Fire under pressure from the start. Despite building an opening pair of 46 runs off 35 balls, they could not accelerate their run rate. Opener Tom Banton got out for just 15 runs off 21 balls.

Ben Duckett then came to the wicket to lead the team to victory but could not increase the run rate. Another opener, Joe Clarke returned to the pavilion for the team’s 72 runs, he smashed 3 fours and 2 sixes. He made the highest 37 runs for the team in 29 balls. With just adding one more run to the scoreboard, Ollie Pope returned to the dressing room before opening his individual scoring book.

Then David Miller came to the wicket. But he also could not do any special favors for his team. He got out after scoring 3 runs in just 7 balls. After that, neither Duckett (25 from 16 balls) nor captain Josh Cobb (11 from 7 balls) could bring the team to the verge of victory due to the aggressive bowling of the Oval Invincibles bowlers. In the end, the innings of Welsh Fire stopped at 119 runs after losing 6 wickets.

Zampa remained unbeaten on 14 and Higgins on 6. Sunil Narine took the highest number of 3 wickets with 21 runs for Oval Invincibles. Besides, Tom Curran took 2 wickets and Sam Curran took 1 wicket each.

By winning this match, Oval Invincibles moved up to the 2nd position in the points table. On the other hand, Welsh Fire is at the bottom of the points table after losing two matches in a row.
