India finished Day 1 of the first Test against England on top as they were 119/1 at stumps on Thursday, January 25 at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium trailing England by 127 runs in the first innings. After opting to bat first, England were bundled out for 246 with captain Ben Stokes top-scoring with 70 (88). For India, Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja were the pick of the bowlers with three wickets each.

India got off to a sensational start in their first innings with captain Rohit Sharma (24 off 27) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (76* off 70) adding 80 runs for the first wicket off just 74 balls. Jaiswal raced to his fifty off just 47 balls while Rohit got dismissed trying to go big against Jack Leach. Following his dismissal, Shubman Gill joined Jaiswal at the crease and took India to stumps with a steady knock of 14* (43).

Earlier in the day, England captain Ben Stokes called it correctly at the toss and elected to bat first. Openers Zak Crawley (20 off 40) and Ben Duckett (35 off 39) got their team off to a good start adding 55 runs for the first wicket off 71 balls smashing ten fours. Seeing the England openers running away with the game, captain Sharma brought his go-to spinner Ravichandran Ashwin into the attack and the off-spinner delivered by trapping Duckett in front of the stumps to give India their first breakthrough.

At the other end, Ravindra Jadeja also got into the act getting the wicket of Ollie Pope who was caught at first slip by the skipper. Ashwin further dismissed Crawley who holed out to mid off in the 16th over leaving England on 60/3. After three quick blows, Joe Root (29 off 60) and Jonny Bairstow (37 off 58) stabilized the innings and took England to Lunch on 108/3.

A rejuvenated India struck back in the second session as Axar Patel castled Bairstow with a peach of a delivery in the 33rd over while Jadeja accounted for Root who top-edged a sweep straight to Jasprit Bumrah at short fine leg. Skipper Stokes held one end but failed to get any support with Ben Foakes (4 off 24) and Rehan Ahmed (13 off 18) also returning back to pavilion.

Ben Stokes unleashed his beast mode in third session

Debutant Tom Hartley played a brief cameo of 23 (24) but eventually lost his stumps against Ravindra Jadeja to take England to 193/8. England went into tea on 215/8 with Stokes on 43* and Mark Wood on 7*. In the third session, the England skipper unleashed his beast mode and powered his way to 70 off 88 balls clobbering six fours and three sixes.

He was finally dismissed by Jasprit Bumrah (2/28) who dismantled his stumps to bundle out England on 246. Ravichandran Ashwin (3/68) and Ravindra Jadeja (3/88) were the pick of the bowlers for India while Axar Patel (2/33) also picked two wickets.

India batting at 8/9 rpo at the start of their innings here. You don’t have to call it brave, bold or bazz ball, it’s literally just playing the situation. Identifying moments in a Test match where u can get ahead in the game is what it’s all about. When the momentum shifts, u…

Ollie Pope, full stretch front foot, but still unable to get to the pitch of the ball. These are the balls that you play off the back foot on turning pictures against spinners. Basic ideology when playing spin. #INDvENG
