Twitter Reactions: Dinesh Karthik’s late blitzkrieg catapults RCB to 196/8 after Jasprit Bumrah show

The first innings of match 25 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 between Mumbai Indians (RCB) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) turned out to be a riveting affair as both teams played with a lot of intensity at the historic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Jasprit Bumrah ran the show for most parts of the first innings as he finished with exceptional figures of 5/21 in four overs. This turned out to be the first five-wicket haul by any bowler against RCB. With the new ball, the Ahmedabad-born dismissed the Orange Cap-holder Virat Kohli in the third over after Hardik Pandya won the toss and elected to bowl first.

The visitors lost their first two wickets inside the powerplay and needed consolidation. It came in the form of a brilliant 82-run partnership off 47 balls between Faf du Plessis and Rajat Patidar. The latter got out for a 26-ball 50 in the 12th over as Glenn Maxwell came out to bat. However, the Australian all-rounder’s struggles continued as he was dismissed for a four-ball duck by Shreyas Gopal.

Bumrah came back in the 17th over and dismissed du Plessis, who scored his first fifty in IPL 2024. After the former South African skipper was dismissed for a 40-ball 61, the dangerous Mahipal Lomror departed for a golden duck as the star pacer bagged two wickets in two balls. The MI speedster bowled the 19th over and accounted for the wickets of Saurav Chauhan and Vijaykumar Vyshak off consecutive deliveries to register his five-for.

Dinesh Karthik came out to bat at No. 6 in the 13th over. The wicketkeeper-batter saw wickets falling from the other end but didn’t flinch. He went on to hit five fours and four sixes in his unbeaten knock of 53 off 23 balls and took the visitors to 196/8 in their stipulated 20 overs.

Out of the last five overs, the three overs which were not bowled by Bumrah cost MI a whopping 52 runs. Interestingly, before this match, no RCB batter apart from Kohli had registered a half-century. However, three batters scored fifties for the Bengaluru-based franchise in what was a topsy-turvy innings.
