Australia’s star all-rounder Glenn Maxwell announced his retirement from ODIs, drawing the curtain on a remarkable 13-year career. However, the 36-year-old has decided to continue representing Australia in T20Is and is expected to feature in the 2026 T20 World Cup.

Maxwell announced the decision Final Word Podcast, citing the physical toll of the format, particularly after a broken leg in 2022 and persistent soreness during the recent Champions Trophy. The Melbourne-born featured in 149 ODIs, hammering 3990 runs at a strike-rate of 126.70, the highest ever among players with 2,000+ ODI runs, and took 77 wickets.

Meanwhile, Maxwell played several unforgettable innings, none more iconic than his unbeaten 201 against Afghanistan at the 2023 ODI World Cup, celebrated as the greatest ODI knock ever. Batting with severe cramps, he single-handedly guided Australia to victory. A two-time ODI World Cup winner (2015, 2023) and part of the 2021 T20 World Cup-winning squad, Maxwell was more than just a big-hitter. His exit is a massive blow to Australia, who will now have to explore other options to fill the gap left by the all-rounder. Let’s take a look at three all-rounders who could replace Glenn Maxwell in Australia’s ODI squad.

Three all-rounders who can replace Glenn Maxwell in Australia’s ODI squad:

1. Ashton Turner

Perth-born all-rounder Ashton Turner has not represented Australia often, but his white-ball abilities make him a strong candidate to replace Glenn Maxwell in the ODI setup. Turner grabbed significant attention with a solid unbeaten 84 off 43 balls against India in Mohali in 2019. Though he has played just nine ODIs so far, he has smashed 192 runs at an average of 32 and a strike rate of 120. With the ball, he has bagged two wickets. The 32-year-old has also featured in 19 T20Is, scoring 110 runs and picking four wickets.

His brilliance in domestic cricket has been hard to ignore. With 1834 List-A runs at a strike rate nearing 97 and consistent match-winning performances for Perth Scorchers in the Big Bash League, Turner has the potential to be a regular member of the Australian side, especially in the 50-over format. His ability to accelerate at the death overs, rotate strike, and finish games, along with being a handy off-spinner, will see national selectors keeping a close eye on him.

2. Tim David

Tim David has been a crucial member of Australia’s T20I squad, making a name for himself as a dependable finisher. However, despite his T20 heroics, the 29-year-old has featured in only four ODIs, with his last appearance in the format dating back to 2023.

Now, with Glenn Maxwell’s retirement from ODIs, David has a good chance of being part of Australia’s ODI setup. The right-hand batter has just 45 runs from four matches at a strike rate of 84.90. Meanwhile, his List-A records have been impressive. In just 20 List-A games, David has 790 runs at an average of 60.76 and a strike rate of 120.06. Notably, in the IPL 2025, David has become RCB’s go-to man, consistently scoring quick runs in the death overs under pressure.

The 29-year-old can be a handy off-spinner as he has taken 10 wickets at an average of 17.10 and an economy of 4.50 in 20 List-A matches. He could be a part-time bowling option, much like Maxwell once was. With Australia looking to revamp their ODI squad post the 2023 World Cup cycle and Maxwell’s exit creating a void, David could be one solid replacement

3. Beau Webster

Beau Webster is another all-rounder who could find a place in Australia’s ODI squad. The all-rounder has scored over 1800 T20 runs and picked 25 wickets, making himself important for the Melbourne Stars in the BBL. His List A numbers are equally impressive, with 1334 runs and 49 wickets from 56 matches. But his major moment came in the 2023-24 Sheffield Shield season, where he topped the run charts with 938 runs at 58.62 and picked 30 wickets.

With the ability to bat anywhere in the top order and provide crucial overs, Webster is expected to bring balance and flexibility to Australia’s ODI setup. His recent Australia A performances, including contributions against India A, and a Test debut in early 2025, make him a strong option for this role.
