India’s T20I captain, Suryakumar Yadav, underwent successful hernia surgery in Munich, Germany, and is currently in recovery.

The flamboyant right-handed batter was last seen at the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, where he played a significant role in Mumbai Indians’ (MI) run into the playoffs. The 34-year-old middle-order batter set a new world record for consecutive 25-plus scores (16). Suryakumar ended the campaign with a total of 717 runs, the highest by a non-opener in the tournament and the highest by an MI batter in a single edition.

India are currently playing a five-match Test series against England in the United Kingdom. This series will end in the first week of August. After this assignment, India will return to the white-ball format, where they travel to Bangladesh to take on the Tigers in three ODIs, followed by as many T20Is. The first T20I is set to be played on August 29.

“Life Update: Underwent surgery for a sports hernia in the lower right abdomen. Grateful to share that after a smooth surgery, I’m already on the road to recovery. Can’t wait to be back,” Suryakumar took to Instagram and posted about the successful surgery.

Suryakumar has not played a Test match since February 2023 and an ODI since the 50-over World Cup final in the same year. The considerably long break before the T20Is against Bangladesh meant that he had some spare time on his hands to go under the knife. He will now look to recover in time before the T20I series against Bangladesh.

Suryakumar took charge as India’s T20I captain, replacing Rohit Sharma after the Men in Blue won the T20 World Cup in 2024. Since then, the Mumbai batter has done a commendable job with a young team at his disposal. Suryakumar has worked diligently with head coach Gautam Gambhir, and the two former Kolkata Knight Riders teammates have brought phenomenal success to the Asian giants in the shortest format of the game.

Under Suryakumar’s reign, India has won 19 out of 24 T20Is and lost on just four occasions with one of the games ending in a tie. The record also includes a Super-Over win versus Sri Lanka.
