Josh Philippe’s stormy innings helped Sydney Sixers to secure a resounding 6-run win over Hobart Hurricanes at the Sydney Cricket Ground yesterday in a rain-interrupted match of BBL 2022. He was adjudged player of the match for his match-winning innings of 43 runs off 21 balls, with 4 fours and 1 six. Also, Sydney Sixers got their first win after losing two matches in a row in this season of BBL.

When the match was delayed due to rain, the game was reduced from 20 overs to 14 overs. After winning the toss, Sydney Sixers captain Moises Henriques elected to bat first sending Hobart Hurricanes to bowl. Sydney Sixers lost 6 wickets in the scheduled 14 overs and collected a big score of 137 runs.

Two openers of Sydney Sixers, Kurtis Patterson, and Josh Philippe gave the team a flying start. The two put on an opening stand of 68 off 40 balls. Kurtis Patterson scored 38 off 25 balls before returning to the pavilion. Where he hit an even number of 2 fours and sixes. Sydney Sixers went on the backfoot when Josh Philippe returned to the pavilion after an over.

Because Shadab Khan came to bowl in the 8th over of the innings and took two consecutive wickets. He took the wicket of Philippe on the 5th ball of the over and the skipper Henriques was his victim before opening the run book. In the next over, Jordan Silk and Daniel Christian became victims of Patrick Dooley. These two returned to the dressing room for zero runs.

James Vince and Hayden Kerr led the team when the Sydney Sixers were in danger after losing 4 wickets in two overs. These two made a partnership of 53 runs for the 6th wicket. Hayden Kerr played an efficient innings of 32 off 20 balls before being run out on the last ball of the innings. Besides, Vince remained unbeaten on 19 runs at the end.

Shadab Khan and Patrick Dooley took the maximum number of 2 wickets each for Hobart Hurricanes. Apart from this, James Neesham took 1 wicket.

Chasing a huge target of 138 runs, the Hobart Hurricanes batsmen were under pressure from the start in the controlled bowling of Sydney Sixers. As a result, they could not get more than 32 runs after losing 2 wickets in 4 overs of Power Play 1. After one by one D’Arcy Short (13), Ben McDermott (17), Matthew Wade (15), and Shadab Khan (14) returned to the dugout.

Hobart Hurricanes needed 65 from 21 balls when James Neesham (5) returned to the pavilion with a team score of 73 runs. Then Asif Ali came to the wicket. As soon as he came in, he started to get on top of the bowlers. They needed 22 runs in the last over to get triumph. Due to Asif’s devastating batting, it looked like Hobart Hurricanes would win the match at one point, but he was sent back to the pavilion by Naveen-ul-Haq on the second ball of the over.

Asif played a devastating innings of 41 off 13 balls before being dismissed. There were 4 fours as well as 3 sixes in his innings. After his departure, Hobart Hurricanes’ hopes of winning also ended. In the end, their innings stopped at 131 runs after losing 7 wickets. For Sydney Sixers, Sean Abbott and Hayden Kerr took 2 wickets each, and Steve O’Keefe, Todd Murphy, and Naveen-ul-Haq took 1 wicket each.

Sydney Sixers have reached 6th place in the points table with one win and two losses in three matches. On the other hand, Hobart Hurricanes are now in the 5th position in the points table with equal points.
