The Australian Cricketers’ Association is supporting a small number of players to pull out of the tour of Pakistan due to safety concerns, despite reassurances about the situation.
The Australian Cricket Team last toured Pakistan in 1998, and the 24-year wait is coming to an end on March 4, as the three-match Test series between Pakistan and Australia is set to begin in Rawalpindi. This tour will also feature 3 ODIs and 1 T20I.
Safety fears still obstruct some players to enter Pakistan. The ACA chief executive Todd Greenberg said that some players might skip the series. Greenberg told SEN that there is anxiety over the tour between some players, and along with Cricket Australia, they’re going to support those players if they want to pull out.
Aussie Test Captain Pat Cummins will also support if any player opts not to travel. However, he affirmed that players are pumped up to do well in the tour.
After the commencement of the war in neighbouring Afghanistan in 2001 and a terrorist attack on the Sri Lankan players in Pakistan, Australia considered not going to Pakistan for any matches till the forthcoming one.
However, Pakistan has hosted Australia in the UAE several times in the past decade. Cricket Australia sent some staff alongside Government officials to Pakistan in December to inspect the security measurements there, and they were pleased to see all the arrangements made there. As a result, the Australian Cricket Team has been scheduled for the tour to Pakistan in March.
The CA (Cricket Australia) is expected to announce the squad for the tour on Tuesday.
