WPL 2023: DC-W vs UP-W 5th Match – Predicted Delhi Capitals Women Playing XI vs UP Warriorz Women

The inaugural edition of the Women’s Premier League has kicked off in style as fans have been pushed to the edge of their seats with enthralling action in the first three matches. The riveting action isexpected to continue as Delhi Capitals and UP Warriorz will be going up against each other in Match five on Tuesday, March 7 at Dr DY Patil Sports Academy, Navi Mumbai.

The Capitals registered a dominant win over Royal Challengers Bangalore in their opening fixture and got their campaign off to a rollicking start. After being put in to bat first, they posted a mammoth 223/2 on the board and restricted RCB to 163/8 to win the match by 60 runs. Delhi Captain Meg Lanning will be hoping for a similar performance in the second game as well.

As Delhi prepare themselves for their second fixture, let’s take a look at the predicted Playing XI for Delhi Capitals for the second game against UP Warriorz.

Openers: Shafali Verma, Meg Lanning(c)

The 19-year-old Shafali Verma set the stage on fire in the first game on Sunday, playing a scintillating knock of 84 runs off 45 deliveries, smashing ten fours and four sixes in her innings. Verma looked set to score the first-ever hundred of the WPL, however, she edged one to the wicketkeeper while trying to reach the landmark quickly. Having failed to create history in her first outing, the swashbuckling opener will be eager to execute it in the second game.

Meg Lanning set the tone for the rest of the season for her team as she played a captain’s knock of 72 off 43 balls. She stitched a massive 162-run stand with Shafali Verma for the first wicket.

The duo forms one of the most formidable opening pairs of the tournament and can rip any bowling line-up apart on their day. Thus, in their second fixture against UP, Delhi will be hoping for the pair to give them a solid start to replicate a similar success as in the first match.

Middle Order:  Jemimah Rodrigues, Alice Capsey, Taniya Bhatia(wk)

In her first outing, Rodrigues played a brilliant cameo of 22 off 15 balls to give a terrific finish to her side. The 22-year-old is in brilliant form as she played two incredible knocks against Pakistan and Australia respectively, in the recently concluded T20 World Cup. She will look to make another vital contribution to her team in the next game.

Alice Capsey didn’t get a chance to bat in the first match but played a crucial role for her team with the ball picking up the prized scalps of Smriti Mandhana and Sophie Devine. She fits in as an obvious all-round choice who can win matches both with bat and ball. After showing her bowling prowess, Capsey would be keen to deliver with the willow as well.

Taniya Bhatia carries with her the experience of 53 T20Is where she has inflicted 68 dismissals. Being out of contention for a spot in the national side with the youngsters taking over, Bhatia has a great chance to make strong statements with her performance and clear the hurdles in her path to break into the national team.

All-rounders: Marizanne Kapp, Shikha Pandey

After having quiet outings with the bat in the recently concluded Women’s T20 World Cup, Kapp rose to the occasion for her franchise in the first game of WPL and played a splendid knock of 39 runs off 17 balls. However, she bowled an expensive spell of 0/36 in four overs. When the team take field against UP on Tuesday, Kapp would be gunning to redeem herself with the ball and leave a mark.

Pandey didn’t get a chance to showcase her batting skills in the first game but ended up picking 1/35 in four overs. After numerous memorable performances for the national team, she would now look to make a name for herself in the realm of franchise cricket.

Fans would hope for the all-rounders to shine both with bat and ball to help Delhi steamroll UP on 7 March. Desperate to rise up to the occasion, both Pandey and Kapp would be raring to play memorable cricket as it would also help them boost their confidence going ahead in the tournament.

Bowlers: Jess Jonassen, Arundhati Reddy, Radha Yadav, Tara Norris

Jess Jonassen bowled an economical spell of 0/28 in four overs. The 30-year-old brings variety to the bowling attack with her left-arm orthodox bowling and thus adds value to the team. Jess Jonassen is one of the foremost spinners in women’s cricket and has 118 WODI scalps to her name in 77 games. Similarly, in WT20I cricket, she has so farpicked up 74 wickets in 87 matches.

Arundhati Reddy didn’t get a chance to either bat or bowl in the first game and will look to make a contribution in any of the departments in the next match. She last played a T20I in July 2021 and has a great chance to storm her way back into the side with a clinical performance in the tournament.

Radha Yadav’s left-arm orthodox bowling proved to be costly in the first game as she gave away 24 runs in two overs.

Tara Norris scripted history in the first game as she became the first bowler to pick up a fifer in the Women’s Premier League and would look to continue the same run throughout the tournament.
