Injury strikes the England side; James Vince to replace injured Jason Roy

Jason Roy, the England opener has been ruled out of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 with a torn left calf. The England cricket team is no longer getting him for the rest of the World Cup. James Vince, who has been with the team as a traveling reserve, has been named to the squad to replace Roy.

Roy said in an official ECB statement that he feels devastated after being ruled out of the World Cup but he will be staying on to support his teammates and hopes his team can lift the trophy. He added that the rehab has already begun and he will going to give himself the best opportunity of being ready for the Caribbean T20 tour at the start of next year.

Roy suffered a sudden muscle injury while taking a single while batting in his last Super 12 match against South Africa in Sharjah on Saturday (November 6). He left the field by that time and was disqualified from the tournament as the injury was found to be serious after the scan. Before being knocked out of the World Cup, Jason Roy made 123 runs playing five matches at an average of 30.75. This is the second-highest among the English batsman in the tournament after Jos Buttler.

Earlier, England left-arm pacer Tymal Mills was knocked out of the tournament due to an injury sustained while bowling in the match against Sri Lanka. He took 7 wickets in four matches before being knocked out, which is the second-highest among English bowlers in the tournament after Adil Rashid (8).

Jonny Bairstow or Dawid Malan could be seen at the start of the innings with Buttler in the semi-final against New Zealand after Roy got dropped out. Sam Billings could be taken in for the middle order to fill the Bairstow-Malan gap. Roy may be replaced by an extra bowler.

England will face New Zealand in the 1st semi-final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 tomorrow (November 10) at the Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi.
