ENG vs NZ (2nd Test – Day 2)

The whole of the second day of the Trent Bridge Test is for Daryl Mitchell. At first he was happy to play the best innings of his career, then he had to leave a pair of catches and heard some condemnation. However, the good thing for New Zealand is that they did not lose control of the match even after Mitchell missed a pair of catches.

At the end of the second day of the match, England scored 90 runs for the loss of 1 wicket in their first innings. Ollie Pope (51) and Alex Lees (34) are unbeaten. Mitchell dropped the catch of these two. Earlier, they were all out for 553 runs with Tom Blundell and Daryl Mitchell’s centuries.

The Kiwis started the game on Saturday with 318 runs for 4 wickets on the first day. Blundell and Mitchell added another 83 runs for the 149-run partnership. Blundell was dismissed for 106 in the third century of his career. By then, Blundell and Mitchell had become the highest run-getter for New Zealand at 236 run partnership for the fifth wicket.

Blundell made 106 off 198 balls and hit 14 fours in two days. He was caught out by Stokes and bowled by Jack Leach.

Mitchell, who is playing the best innings of his career, made a 91-run partnership with debutant Michael Bracewell. Bracewell was bowled out for 49 by Jimmy Anderson on the verge of fifty.

Bracewell made 49 off 87 balls. He had 9 fours in his collection. Root grabbed Bracewell’s catch and sent him off to the dressing room.

Then Jamieson made 14 off 12 balls and hit 3 fours. Broad sent him back to the dressing room.

Then Southee and Henry left the field for 4 and 0 runs respectively. Mitchell then stopped playing with a personal 190 runs after crossing the 500(team total) runs mark. Mitchell scored 190 off 318 balls. He hit 23 fours and 4 sixes. He was caught out by foakes with a potted bowl and left the field.

Boult hit 16 off 18 balls with four fours and remained unbeaten.

For England, James Anderson took 3 wickets for 62 runs in 27 overs. Broad took 2 wickets for 107 runs in 26 overs. Potts took 1 wicket. Stokes and Leach both took two wickets each.

England batted 26 overs in the last session of the day. Jack Crawley, who scored 4 in the second over, was caught behind by Trent Boult. He could only play 6 balls.

Tim Southee could have succeeded in the seventh over. But standing on the first slip, Mitchell dropped an easy catch by another opener Alex Lees.

Lees didn’t make a mistake after getting life in the beginning. Pope also teamed up with him to bat smoothly. However, Boult created an opportunity in the 23rd over to end the day’s play. This time neither the wicketkeeper Blundell nor Mitchell caught the ball. The ball touches Mitchell’s hand and goes to the boundary. New Zealand could not break this pair.

So far, Pope has scored 51 off 73 balls with six fours and two sixes. Lees, on the other hand, has scored 34 runs off 77 balls. And hit five fours.

England are now on a 463-run trial and will bat on the 3rd day at 4pm today.
