AUS vs ENG (3rd ODI) – Highlights

Eight days after winning the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 in Melbourne, revisiting England played an ODI match against hosts Australia at the same venue. They had already lost the 3-match ODI series by losing in Adelaide and Sydney. But this time when they came to play at Melbourne, they lost by a record margin.

Australia scored 355 runs in 48 overs with twin centuries from Travis Head and David Warner, England’s target was 364 runs in the D/L system. But chasing the target, Jos Buttler’s team was bowled out for just 142 runs. As a result, the Aussies won by 221 runs in the D/L method.

This is England’s biggest margin of defeat in their history regarding runs, although Australia has five more wins by larger margins.

England captain Buttler, who was rested in the previous match, won the toss and came down to the field first. Batting on the MCG wicket was not easy in the beginning. But there, Head and Warner continued to frustrate the English bowlers. Both scored 64 runs in the first powerplay. England could not stop these two quickly.

Head completed his fifty in 55 balls, Warner needed 53 balls. In the 27th over, Head completed his century in just 91 balls by playing a cut shot off Chris Woakes for four. Warner, however, had to wait until the 37th over, hitting Olly Stone for a four between mid-off and extra cover to bring up his century off 97-ball.

Before Warner’s century, his opening partnership with Head brought up 250 runs for the Aussies. Head and Warner are now only the second duos in ODI history to score 250 runs. This feat was achieved by India’s Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly earlier.

Warner finally stopped in the 39th over when he was caught by David Willey at deep midwicket while trying to pick up Stone. Warner scored 106 runs in 102 balls with 8 fours and 2 sixes. His partnership with Head was 269 runs. This is the highest partnership for any wicket in ODIs at the MCG, and second highest against England for any wicket.

It looked like Head would get a double century even if Warner returned to the dressing room. But after 3 balls, he was also bowled by Stone. Head played an amazing innings of 152 runs off 130 balls, with 16 fours and 4 sixes. In the end, Steven Smith’s 16 off 21, Mitchell Marsh’s 16 off 30, and Alex Carey’s unbeaten 6 off 12-run cameo innings helped Australia to collect a huge score of 355 runs.

After that, the rain stopped the match. As a result, the game came down to 48 overs. Olly Stone took England’s highest number of 4 wickets with 85 runs in 10 overs. Besides, Liam Dawson took the remaining 1 wicket.

England never got momentum in the run chase. Phil Salt was knocked out earlier due to a concussion, and Dawid Malan (2) came to open with Jason Roy. However, the duo could not stay for even 3 overs. James Vince (22) and Roy (33) put on 42 runs for the second wicket partnership, but England lost wickets at regular intervals after that.

In the beginning, after Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood, Adam Zampa struck England hard. The leg-spinner came in for the first time in the 22nd over. In his next over, he sent off 2 balls in succession to Buttler (1) and Woakes. In his next over, he took the wicket of Moeen Ali (18), who came in as a replacement for Salt. After that, Sam Curran (12) and Dawson (18) were sent back by the delivery of Sean Abbott and Mitchell Marsh, and Zampa took Stone’s (4) wicket.

Along with that, the visitors’ innings stopped after scoring 142 runs in 31.4 overs. Adam Zampa scalped the maximum number of 4 wickets for Australia. Apart from this, Pat Cummins and Sean Abbott snapped up 2 wickets, while Mitchell Marsh and Josh Hazlewood took 1 wicket each.
