Top 3 Run-Getters from South Africa vs Australia Test Series

South Africa clinched the three-match Test series against Australia 2-1 after a commanding 176-run victory in the third Test at Newlands, Cape Town. The series featured outstanding batting performances, resilient partnerships and several innings that shaped the outcome of the contests.

Australia won the opening Test by 214 runs, but South Africa responded emphatically in Gqeberha, winning the second Test by an innings and 31 runs. The Proteas then sealed the series in Cape Town, rising to the top of the World Test Championship standings.

Matt Renshaw topped the run-scoring charts, while South Africa’s Temba Bavuma and Aiden Markram also made significant contributions. Here are the top three run-getters from the series.

1. Matt Renshaw – 369 runs

Australia’s Matt Renshaw finished as the leading run-scorer of the series, accumulating 369 runs across the three Tests. His performances provided Australia with valuable stability in a series where the visitors struggled to consistently counter South Africa’s bowling attack.

Renshaw’s standout performance came in the opening Test, where he scored a magnificent 190. The innings was the highest individual score of the series and helped Australia establish a commanding position. He also finished with a series average of 73.8, highlighting his consistency across the tour.

The left-handed batter showed patience against South Africa’s pace attack and the ability to occupy the crease for long periods. His innings was particularly important in the first Test, which Australia eventually won by 214 runs.

Although Renshaw could not replicate his early success in the final two Tests, his overall contribution ensured that he finished comfortably ahead of the other batters on the run-scoring leaderboard.

2. Temba Bavuma – 218 runs

South Africa captain Temba Bavuma was the second-highest run-scorer in the series, finishing with 218 runs. His most memorable contribution came in the second Test at St George’s Park, where he produced a superb 179 to help South Africa take control of the match.

Bavuma’s innings was a masterclass in concentration and shot selection. Facing an Australian attack featuring Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood, he built his innings patiently and capitalised on scoring opportunities when they appeared.

His 179 was the second-highest individual score of the series, behind Renshaw’s 190. It also earned him the Player of the Match award as South Africa secured an innings-and-31-run victory.

Beyond the numbers, Bavuma’s contribution was significant because it helped South Africa recover from their defeat in the opening Test. His leadership and batting provided the foundation for the Proteas’ series comeback.

3. Aiden Markram – 202 runs

Aiden Markram completed the top three with 202 runs in the series. The South African opener played an important role in providing starts and helping the hosts build partnerships against Australia’s pace-heavy attack.

Markram’s ability to play positively while remaining composed at the crease made him a valuable presence at the top of the order. His contributions helped South Africa establish platforms for the middle order, particularly in the two Tests they won.

The opener also provided occasional support with the ball, giving the team another option when required. While he did not produce an innings as large as Bavuma’s 179 or Renshaw’s 190, his aggregate of 202 runs placed him among the most productive batters of the series.

Markram’s performance was especially important in a contest where batting conditions varied significantly across the three venues. His consistency helped South Africa maintain pressure on Australia and build towards their eventual series victory.

Rank Player Team Runs
1 Matt Renshaw Australia 369
2 Temba Bavuma South Africa 218
3 Aiden Markram South Africa 202

While Renshaw finished as the series’ most prolific batter, South Africa’s collective batting effort—combined with decisive bowling performances—ultimately proved crucial in securing the series 2-1.
