Billy Root retires from professional cricket aged 34

Billy Root announced his retirement from professional cricket on September 23, 2026, at the age of 34, bringing a 14-year county career to an end. The left-handed batter represented Nottinghamshire and Glamorgan across all formats during that time, collecting four trophy wins between the two clubs.

In his final season, Root featured in only two County Championship matches and also captained Glamorgan’s second XI, underlining how his role at the club had evolved in the latter stages of his playing days.

“It has been an absolute privilege to represent two great clubs and to share in the success of four trophy wins. I feel incredibly lucky to have had the opportunity to make a career out of something I have loved since I was a kid,” Root said, as quoted by Cricinfo.

What did Billy Root achieve across his county career?

Root came into professional cricket with Nottinghamshire after completing his studies at Leeds Beckett University. He was part of the Nottinghamshire squad that claimed the white-ball double in 2017, one of the county’s standout limited-overs campaigns of that period.

After moving to Glamorgan in 2019, Root contributed to two One-Day Cup title wins with the Welsh county. He was also part of the Glamorgan side that earned promotion to Division One of the County Championship last summer, giving him a fitting send-off at the club.

Root grew up playing alongside his brother and England Test captain Joe at Sheffield Collegiate CC. The pair briefly shared the field during a Test at Lord’s in 2013, when Billy was with MCC Young Cricketers and served as England’s 12th man.

“There have been plenty of ups and downs over the last 14 years, but I wouldn’t change a thing. I’ll always be incredibly grateful for the journey, the people l’ve shared it with and the opportunity to live out a childhood dream. Thank you to everyone who has played a part,” Root added.

The retirements at Glamorgan are part of a broader wave of departures across the county circuit this week. Scott Borthwick of Durham, Luke Charlesworth of Gloucestershire, Anuj Dal of Derbyshire and Rob Keogh of Northamptonshire are among the other experienced professionals also calling time on their careers.
