Former Australian pacer Jason Gillespie has made scathing remarks on England’s former captain Kevin Pietersen for his response to Alastair Cook’s suggestion of Jacob Bethell skipping IPL for County Cricket exposure.

The discussion began after former England opener Alastair Cook had suggested that Bethell should consider leaving the IPL early and return to county cricket to gain valuable match practice ahead of England’s home summer.

Bethell, who was an integral part of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in IPL 2026, had largely remained on the sidelines during the first half of the tournament, despite being regarded as one of England’s most promising young batters.

Speaking on a podcast alongside Australian greats Glenn McGrath and Damien Fleming, Gillespie took aim at Pietersen for criticising Cook’s remarks and sarcastically questioned the former England batter’s reaction.

“The nerve of Sir Alastair Cook to suggest something like that,” Gillespie said sarcastically during The Fast Bowling Cartel podcast.

“KP has gone off the deep end and stated that Sir Alastair Cook’s opinion doesn’t matter because he’s never been to the IPL and would not know,” he continued.

Gillespie backed Cook’s viewpoint and said the former England skipper had raised a fair concern considering Bethell was not getting regular opportunities in the tournament.

“I think Sir Alastair Cook had a valid point, but the way KP absolutely hammered him for having an opinion – give me a spell boys. Absolute nonsense,” Gillespie added.

The former Australia pacer then launched a more brutal attack while mocking Pietersen’s claims about helping players prioritise franchise cricket.

“He reckons he would have played 150 Tests or more. He’s the one who paved the way. Thank you, Kevin, for the stars above, the sun, the moon, the earth we walk on and the air we breathe. It was all about cash for you. Kev. Give me a break, you muppet,” Gillespie concluded.

Earlier, Cook had stressed that while the IPL offers a high-quality learning environment, young players still need consistent game time for proper development. Pietersen, however, strongly disagreed with Cook’s take and argued that being part of an IPL setup itself provides massive value for a youngster.
