The first Test of the 2018-19 tour of Australia was a historic one for India as they managed to win their first Test Down Under in 10 years. The last time they had won a red-ball contest coming into this was back in January 2008.
Speaking of how the match played out, India were bowled out for 250 in 88 overs despite Cheteshwar Pujara’s 246-ball 123-run knock. It was a collective bowling effort by the Australians, led by Josh Hazlewood’s three-wicket haul.
A wonderful fightback by the Indian bowlers on the second day reduced the hosts to 191/7 by stumps as Australia ended up conceding a slender 15-run lead. Similar to how Australia bowled, each of the bowlers other than the part-timer contributed with wickets.
Pujara once again top-scored for India, with 71 to his name. Ajinkya Rahane contributed with 70 even as Nathan Lyon returned excellent figures of 6/122 in 42 overs. Australia were set a target of 323 with a little over four sessions left in the match.
They lost four wickets by the end of play on the fourth day. The contest ended up in the hands of India by 31 runs as Australia were bowled out for 291. Jasprit Bumrah, Ravichandran Ashwin and Mohammed Shami snapped up three wickets apiece.
